I have read multiple times that the cutting and bulking cycle isnt optimal for nattys.
Whats the best for us? Just eating at maintenance and going slowly up in weight all year round or what?

this is contradictory, if you eat at maintenance you will not gain weight
comprehensive guide:
1. get lean, down to 10-12% bodyfat (better nutrient partitioning, favorable hormonal milieu if you are lean)
2. bulk at a moderate surplus (500-750, much below this is really easy to erase by taking a few flights of stairs or something and much above this is just additional fat gain without much muscle gaining benefit)
3. when you get above 15-16%, you should probably stop and cut back to 10-12% before repeating the process
additionally, bulking or cutting for more than ~3 months at a time tends to produce a lot of diminishing returns, you should probably break up long cuts or long bulks with periods at maintenance (not as important if total DYEL or fat fuck)
on recomping (which is what you're suggesting): it works really well for people who haven't been training long, are detrained, are starting steroids, changing their steroid dosages/stacks, etc. - if you have been training hard for a couple years, recomping does next to nothing and will leave you spinning your wheels

You can leanbulk for ages on a 100-250 surplus
