What do you guys do for a living?
Does your work make it hard for you to actually be fit?
>>

I work as a dock worker and truck loader for a window company.

I would say that it does. After moving and throwing 600+ windows in a day, you end up pretty exhausted. Gotta avoid exercise 2 of the days I work, otherwise I have literally zero energy.

M-F is running/lifting, Thurs-Sunday is four days, 10 hour shifts or more depending on how many trucks we have to load.

POG Marine current stationed at 29 Palms. I workout at 0400 everyday without any issues. I'm almost done with my enlistment (thank God) and I will be back to normie life taking supplements and going to the gym during peak hours. Most of my bulking is done at the chow hall, which means your tax dollars are helping me make my gains, thanks /fit/.

I work as a Field Engineer for oil and Gas companies. Do a lot of traveling which is fun, in China right now. Make a lot of money

But it does make it hard to lift when you're traveling so often. Especially since a lot of countries don't have decent gyms. Worst is in the middle east.

Part time farmhand here. Both helps and hurts. It has helped my work capacity and I think my forearms look better, but it burns so many calories and often you have hard days that impact your lifting days.
Also the dusty environment makes me really tired in the head if I have a long day, and it makes me unfocused and tired when lifting. I've still hit PRs on hard days, but it's draining.

Right now I work in Exercise Rehab and do some Personal Training
Ironically my schedule is so packed that I can't train like I'd want to, but the good news is that my core endurance and stability have gotten pretty goddamn good because I show people how to do exercises that address those things 6 days a week.
But now I have to do some of my cardio at home which sucks a fat dick because I hate cardio and like to just zone out listening to podcasts and shit on the elliptical/stair stepper and I can't do that at home.

How many days? If you get 8 hours of sleep this leaves 4 for shitting, eating, lifting, free time, etc.
How do you manage?
>>
>>40525942
>>40526159

I work for a private equity group, very small only 2 partners and 6 employees. We own 13 businesses and I assist in the operations and back-end management for 3 of them. I'm very low level at 24 years old and make $35,000 salary plus generous commissions when I help close deals or save the company money. Last year I made $47,000.

Some downsides are that I get no benefits (health, dental, vision, etc), very limited paid-time off (2 weeks per year), and I am always "on call" to a certain extent. The money is also not very good for the amount of responsibility that is placed on me, but I understand that it takes time to build a career in this industry.

Some benefits are that I can come and go pretty much as I please. Our work hours are 9-5, but they are more of a guideline because I often come in late and leave early if nobody else is in the office. The people I work with, including the partners, are very generous with their knowledge and have taken a personal interest in my life in a sort of "mentor" role. My dream is to have enough money that I can live off of interest or own a few companies while other people run them. I want to create passive income streams that require very little active management from myself, this is a great position to learn how to do that.

>Does your work make it hard to actually be fit?

No. I can eat at my desk all day if I want to. I leave early and come in late a few days per week so that I can visit the gym during non-peak hours. I have an office that is entirely my own, so I normally get up to stretch and do some push ups every few hours.

I'm >>40526584

I interned with a hedge fund and a commercial bank while I was in school and got offered a $65K + benefits + bonus job with Morgan Stanley out of college. I didn't take it because everyone that I knew in IB worked 50+ hours per week and unironically had horrible personal finance management. They still lifted but their lives pretty much revolved around working and getting fucked up while spending their money (nice cars, expensive dinners, etc). It's all cool shit, but I have a much different perspective on what is valuable to me.

If you really like to *work* and want to spend most of your time *working*, IB will be a great fit. Personally, I like spending my time with other things and just want the benefits of the finance industry (big pay). I gave up the big pay for the ability to learn from some veterans, however I'm working only 30~ hours a week on average and get to really enjoy my life. I also think the big pay will come to me sooner than the IB big pay (senior partners, vp, etc, take 6-9 years).

If you aren't going IB, than commercial or retail banking will be a good fit but a slow steady grind and the pay is meh. Accounting is the same as any other office job, but it's getting mostly automated so you'll have free time to lurk the internet and basically waste your time.

I study and work as a carpenter/joiner; I do custom ordered furniture these days at my family's company.

This actually got me into working out properly. Sure I've always been physically active but considering my disability, I felt somewhat inadequate because I didn't think I was strong enough, to carry material and such often.

So I started hitting the gym just to gain strength and now I'm a health and fitness freak. the job itself is quite a workout sometimes, except on days I do finer shit like marquetry and such, or technical drawing.

Staying in shape is easy because we built a gym in a shipping container behind our premesis.

It doesn't have much but it has a makeshift rack, bench, parallel bars, makeshift oly flooring, an oly and a power bar, an EZ bar, one of those attachments you use to do t-bar rows, a straight pull up bar, an ab wheel, straps, wrist wraps, bumper plates, a foam roller, resistance bands and adjustable dumbbells. in the summer we're going to build some basic cable machines and a buy a trap bar. The only thing I want that we can't facilitate is a prowler, there's no space for it.

Senior engineer working for a vehicle manufacturer. Make good money but the commute and work is a mental/physical gains killer. Living and breathing coffee with moody old men which i can feel are stealing my life energy.

All in all its pretty good.
>>
>>40527886

Starting out, the pay is shit (average is probably around 25k, sometimes less sometimes more)

I'm making about 36k now which is alright. If you work long enough at it to become a curator or director you can make some decent money but that takes time obviously.

It really is a cool job though. You get to work with a lot of great animals, not sit at a desk all day, and everyone you meet who you talk to about your job find it really interesting unless they're a PETA faggot.

The company I worked for out of college(and the reason I chose it) sends their engineers out to plant locations around the world to support their technology.

That's how I got my foot in the door and it's been pretty easy to stay in the field since.

If you're not lucky enough to pick a company out of college that allows you to do that then no problem.

Here's a couple simple tips greatly increase your chances.

1. Learn Chinese/Indian/Arabic. All three countries outsource a massive amount of their engineering needs. Any foreign language will do really(spanish for example). But those three are in my opinion the most useufl.
2. Get an FE/PE. This is a must if you want to do any contracting jobs(which are common with Field Services Engineering).
3. Do an oversea's internship if you're still in college.
4. Get a Six Sigma Green Belt.
5. If you're interested in Oil and Gas consider Exxon/Schlumberger/Honeywell/Haliburton
6. IF you're American and none of those apply consider working for a European company that has American sites(pretty common). Many tend to have a rotational program that will send you to their European plants/locations. This'll give you international experience.

Once you have your foot in the door you'll be there as long as you want because of the insane turnover rate. I've done it for 4.5 years now and I'm like the grandad in terms of experience when I go to a site.

college really depends on professors and school, but once you get the hang of it it's not that hard to jump around between languages
>>
>>40525942
Depends on the company. I used to work for a gaming company. It was an office setting but hours were flexible and you could dress however you want.

But after working for 3.5 years I was laid off a month ago so now job searching is suffering.
>>
>>40528548
I do, but only because i run the show with a friend.

If it was only me I'd like it far less, and if it were me doing what we do for someone else I'd enjoy it a hell of a lot less.
>>
>>40525942
Depends. I let my employees do whatever they want so long as it doesn't infringe on me or on their work. As far as I'm concerned, they can drink, smoke, do whatever they please, IF the work gets done and they don't risk my company in any way.

Example: there was a receptionist who worked really fast and I used to let him go home early and pay him for the extra hour he saved. I ended up giving him a driving job, but he smoked in the van carrying chilled food so I fired him.
>>
>>40528634
Wow you seem like a chill/reasonable boss, but do you ever feel like some of your employees will take advantage of you?
>>
Anyone else work in and office and try to get up every hour or so to stretch a little or just walk around?

I'm wondering if the benefits are worth looking strange to people in the office
>>
>>40528707
Not really. I know what I need them to do and all I ask of them is to do it. The ones who don't do it stick out like a sore thumb and if they don't do their job properly they don't keep it. I go out of my way to be as fair as possible with people cause we all have our personal shit going on, and I fully understand that they probably don't enjoy their jobs, but if they start taking the piss its obvious and I take it personally, even though I definitely shouldn't, so I hire someone else.

This is very rare though, I've only fired 3 people.
>>
>>40528634
Wouldn't mind being employed by you. I work really fast at my job too, however I doubt there's any such reward. Best case scenario, no one notices, worst would be the management just take it as an excuse for me to work an hour less than others and therefore pay me less.
>>
>>40528761
i wouldn't mind employing you. people like you are who i value most.

I work two retail jobs. I'm a supervisor at an edgy mall store. My gains just mean that I have to lift heavy things. My second job is just a CSR at a video game chain. My gains mean that I throw the garbage a lot and I'm often picked to deescalate belligerent customers but I have a high charisma and diplomacy score IRL so this is easy.
My height however is the reason they keep me around. I can reach most of the stuff on the top shelf without a ladder. Its just that being 6'8" inspires animal fear on most people when I look down at them. Sometimes girls get flirty, mostly teenage fat chicks.

Well I'm a long way from Cali, but a quick Google search tells me Asplundh (company I work for) operates there also. Although if you're in a metro area I imagine it would be more difficult than rural areas.
Basically, what we do is trim back tree limbs so they're 15 feet back from any power lines. We focus a lot on rural lines, though, so we run a Jiraffe (pic related) and also have a tractor with a mower attached to it. I used to just walk and tie pink ribbon to shit under the lines all day so my guys wouldn't run anything over or harm the equipment, but lately the power company (we're contracted under them, so they pretty much run us, although we have our own chain of command per say) assigned us a wood chipper and started making us take the trimmer into suburbs and shit. Which is hell on earth some days, seeing as how the Jiraffe can trim in an hour what you can clean up in 3.
But in Cali they'll probably just give you to a bucket crew. You've probably seen those trucks around, with the hydraulic lifts. Most cable and phone companies have them.
But yeah, I'm always at home unless I'm on storm work or working out of town, which isn't very often.
Also dirty south reporting in, so cost of living is low. I started at like $11/hr, but you'll probably be making more + if you're in metro they get paid more

The only two legit Six Sigma certification's are the American Quality Society and the International Association for Six Sigma. So something that focuses on them I guess?

Keep in mind though that Six Sigma certification in-house or in-company are usually viewed just as highly as those.

Usually most engineering companies and some colleges have a six sigma program that will pay and provide all necessary tools to get your certification.

My own company provided me the tools, training and a six sigma project to lead as well as payed for me to take the tests. If you work for a company there's almost certainly some part of it that offers a way to do this.

Not too bad. In my experience a lot of qt's in this major, but ymmv. It's not as much about working out as it is movement function, though, so you're going to learn about rehab for large chunks of your time. If you want more working out type education, look more into sports training which often has it's own program.

>psychology
Don't do this unless you know you're going to grad school for the field or you want to fuck around for a couple years. Not to pull the STEM meme, but psych degree programs are piss easy and highly accessible to retards. Even if you go to a school that isn't awash with increasingly biased teaching methods, your peers in the major will not be people you want to associate with if you prefer people that don't think in the lowest common denominators.

>business
If you're not going to go for a career in this but you still want to learn more, I'd delegate this to a minor. If you don't quickly make connections, your business undergrad will be pretty difficult to utilize. Depending on the program, an MBA will do more for you than an undergrad, but these are becoming the psych degrees of graduate work.

How do I bulk successfully then? Do I just make sure I'm eating a fuck ton at a caloric surplus?
>>
>>40530486
Yes, cardio is amazing for your overall health. Just make sure you're eating enough. That's all there is.

Also leave cardio for after workouts, cardio DOES kill gains if you do it before lifting.

I do the vast majority of my work downstream but you mid/upstream fags are alright in my book.

If I were you I would steer clear of any downstream company ie Schlumberger/Haliburton they will not be hiring anytime soon until the oil price rises back up which may not be for a few years.

Paramedic. It's actually very bad for health. I really wish EMS would jump on the fire bandwagon of taking pride in one's physical fitness. I'm one of the only fit people at my job even though our state is bottom 3 in obesity.

I work as a high school teacher.

I find it creepy when my female students compliment me when I'm cutting before I go on a bulk.

That's one thing I love about the consulting firm I work for. The company pays for our gym memberships completely.
>>
>>40530565

I joined the Air National Guard, I'm going to basic in 3 months. I hear they're kinda big on physical fitness there.
>>
>>40530632

I teach music so 9-12. I wear my school ID and it was taken when I was on a bulk back in September so now I'm 20 pounds fat off lighter.

>Mr. Anon when are you going to get married so we can all go to one
>Mr. Anon you are wearing those pants to show off
>>
>>40530580
Depends on your career level. If you're entry level now is a pretty good time to get into downstream.

When companies like Schlumberger or Haliburton need to cut costs they fire mid level engineers who have had lackluster careers and hire new college grads for cheap.
>>
>>40530656
Wow that is kinda creepy. On an unrelated note, do you have any meme spouting faggots in your classes by any chance?

IT "analyst" for a large energy/gas company . If anything it's made lifting easier because I'm like one of the only people who uses the company gym.
>>
Finishing up my masters in materials science right now. Currently working for a drug design company. Kinda terrified about what I'm going to do after graduation.

Most of my experience is in biotech (kinda just worked out that way) even though I want to do materials. It puts me at a disadvantage for materials jobs. Not to mention there's like no entry level positions for masters degree. Shit load of stuff for people with 5+ years work experience, but that aint me.

Part of me wants to stay at the company I'm at now. It'd be super convenient. I'd get good pay, I'd get to stay in a city where I know lots of people, I wouldn't have to figure out moving, etc. At the same time I don't know how much of a future I have in biotech, and it feels like staying with it now will basically lock me out of materials.

It'd be cool to get a job doing polymer design for 3d printing or something like that.

Two things:

1. Schlumberger is a dick company which is why it's better known as Scumburger
2. Scumburger does Upstream. IE oil extraction. Downstream is oil refineries type stuff like Exxon/BP/Sinopec etc. They do do a little bit of downstream but it sure as hell isn't their focus.

yeah I meant upstream my b. I'm glad I didn't go with them because those first few years as a field engineer would've killed my gains

Do you like small talk?

If you do, being an office cuck is sweet as hell. I have a company gym and the company pays for a gym membership of my choosing. I can flash a letter from the company at a dealership and pay 1% off invoice, no haggling. I get discounts at most local stores. The company provides free counseling services. I get a platinum healthcare plan for $70/month. I do 2 hours of real work a day and make almost six figures in middle America, which lets me live pretty well.

Most of my day is spent chatting with coworkers about family, football, animu, vidya, the news, shit like that. Lotta Dilbert jokes and office-type humor. Pretty normie, desu. I probably wouldn't like it if I was shy. Also, spending most of your day in an office can make you a fatass pretty quickly.
>>
>>40531197
Well I'm new so I don't charge too much. Just $50-60 a pair.

I make like 400-500 in tip when I bartend so it's cool. I'm just hoping I can get into nursing school. I can't do this shit forever.

as someone who works in the industry, you probably don't want to be a filmmaker.
Go try to make a short film and if you love it, it might be. But I've seen so many people show up saying "I quit my job in X to work in my dream job in film." They always have some idealized version of what it's like and fucking hate it in a year.

Pretty much. I watch all of the employees and the nurses and CNAs have it the worst. They have to deal with the patients and family members in their worst moods. They have to wipe asses and watch patients slowly die over the course of days/weeks knowing the only thing they can do is attempt to make it painless but even that doesn't work sometimes because the hospital wants to cheap out on the medication.

I was working on the ER a week ago and some lady was trying to go into a staff only area and threw a fit when the nurse stopped her. I was cleaning the room across from her so I saw some of it, the nurse held her arms up and barely touched her then the lady started crying "assault." They eventually had to call security and I had to listen to her bullshit her story for fifteen minutes while I was in the area before she told security to call the police so she could file a report. She then started playing the racial discrimination card (she was black). I don't know what happened beyond that but I hope the bitch was charged for filing a fake report and wasting everyones time.

Long story short, I'm glad I'm not a goddamn nurse.

Depends on what advice you're looking for. The average doctor isn't well-versed in fitness stuff and will just recommend whatever carries the least risk.

Feeling a bit of pain doing a certain exercise because your body does something affecting form? Doc will tell you to stop doing it altogether, rather than helping you figure out how to get around it.
