I know I sound retarded for asking, but would you say someone can build fair upper body size with these alone?

You could get a fairly good sized upper body with body weight alone, just put in the work. I'd look around on youtube for some dumbells workouts you can do.

If you have a bench, just do the usual. Dumbbell flys, dumbbell press, etc.

Without any form of improv bench, try the same things on flat ground, still help quite a bit, until you can get a proper set up. Do rows, weighted squats, bicep curls, and pretty much every other makeshift exercise you can think of.

Also, do incline push ups, weighted sit ups, etc etc.

Not optimal, but improv is a billion times better than nothing.

ab exercises you don't need equipment for

then all you're missing is legs: running/biking/jump-rope?

yes you can build strength and size with just those dumbells. You just have to do a lot of reps since the weight is limited
