Pushing through the pain is what builds tolerance session by session. You gain the tolerance for competition day by dealing with the pain on training day.
Depending on your sport, it may also be common practice to do "threshold sessions" specifically geared toward improving this tolerance. Google it.
You can also make metabolic waste flush out faster so you feel less sore/recover faster by cooling down properly. Aim for 5 minutes minimum post-session to just move lightly and keep the blood flowing.
