It honestly shouldn't be too surprising, if you look at any obesity levels map. This is from 2015. Obviously, the fact that none of them are below 20% is a big fucking problem, but all of the really deep red ones are right-leaning, while 3 out or 5 of the green ones are left-leaning. Also, while there are pinks and yellows on both sides, the pink ones are far more in Republican favor than Democrat, and almost all of the yellow ones (Still pretty bad, but better than pink, at least) are either Democrat or swing states.

A lot of the people in power at the federal level are also similar in political leanings to those in power at the state level. Even more so now after the GOP got control of both Houses this past year.

Increasingly yeah. America has always had more fat people but it really started getting bad in the late 2000's and these absolute freakshows started appearing in public, they shamelessly use mobility scooters and pay for their shit using food stamps, WIC, or whatever other social program is available to them.

I went to a buffet for the first time in years over the weekend, I think my wife and I were the only ones there that weren't using scooters.

Honestly? Not even that. Before I got into fitness, sure, I could tell you how many calories were in a serving of a thing by the back of the box, but I couldn't tell you what that meant.

Essentially, I didn't have a scale for which of those numbers were significant. I saw "200 calories" on a chocolate bar and thought "I can eat 10 of those per day, if I don't eat anything else." That's technically correct, but it doesn't smoothly translate to "this is basically worthless, and 200 calories is kind of a lot for a sugary snack like this one: eat sparingly at most," especially if you're generally not very good with numbers, which I admit I'm not. It's only after I started tracking what I ate that I got a proper understanding of what those numbers meant and how many calories I ate per meal.

And counting calories is itself only the start. If I really did eat nothing but 10 chocolate bars per day, I would definitely get fatter because that sugar is going to do terrible things to my insulin levels. It takes more varied macronutrients to eat properly, which isn't conveyed in calories but in a closer understanding of what fats, proteins, and carbohydrates are found in and how those chemicals are different from each other. So yeah, they can certainly get started by looking at a Nutrition Facts label, but being able to read a chart and being able to usefully interpret it are unfortunately not the same feat.

When I pour myself milk, I just think I poured myself a cup of milk. But in reality, I'm actually serving myself a cup and a half of milk. I never realized it, until I decided to actual measure out the amount I would pour myself.

Neither of these things correlates with greater or higher quality education re: obesity.
My mistake about the pizza, then. But I believe it is true that a population that is well educated on what, for example, indicates a proper portion size will be less likely to eat improperly large portions.

It was either a bonus for losing weight or an additional tax on gaining it for straining their medical system, I think the latter. It's an intriguing idea that would certainly address your concerns about people not being interested in losing weight, although I'm not certain about how ethical it is (although it wouldn't be that different from "sin taxes" in general).

It's only places like fast food or family dining places (TGI Friday's or Applebees' etc.) that serve massive portions because they want to give the impression that going there is cost-effective (because you don't spend much and you leave it feeling full). That's a good question. It might indeed be a poor-to-middle class thing. That is, every time I've eaten at a pricier restaurant, I've noticed the portions are far more reasonable, like something a properly trained chef would serve.

But things like fast food and diners, which have much cheaper prices, the portions can get pretty nuts. There's a place near where I used to work that would serve subs that were near 2' long, and those were the medium sizes. Another place near another office I used to work at always has chicken fingers ready to go, as their big thing was a chicken finger sub. If you ordered a small order of chicken fingers, you'd get a pretty god damn huge basket of the things.

It really does seem to be that they want to say "Hey, look how much food you get for the price!", which resonates with people who can't afford much. Even if it's cheaper to make the food yourself, it still hits that part of your brain that says "Well shit, this is a good deal. I would be crazy to pass that up!", especially when you have kids to feed.

That's exactly it. A lot of this shit is unconscious, which I think is part of why it's hasty to assume that fat people just don't care: if they were aware that this is what's happening, and they were also aware in a visceral sense that eating that much food is not fucking good for you, they would be more serious about avoiding it.

It would be naive to say there's just one or two causes for this, of course. But yes, that's part of it. We've become so efficient at creating large amounts of food that contain questionable nutritional value that we're able to sell large amounts of it for cheap. In doing so, people who are not in the best financial situations end up buying lots of garbage, because at least it's something, right? That dollar-menu hamburger seems like a great deal, and is marketed as such nonstop. But even though it would actually be more cost-efficient (and tastes better) to grab the ingredients and get like 6 burgers for only two or three times the cost, that shit pierces right through your logic and hits your emotional center.

It also doesn't help that things like High Fructose Corn Syrup can get very addictive, and also that eating can set off pleasure centers in the brain. It's real easy to let yourself fall down the black hole of shitty food like that. Especially if you live in rural areas, where there isn't fuck-all to do with your time. So you end up eating just because you're so fucking bored.

I don't think you're paying attention. You said that spending on obesity has risen -- it has, but that spending is generally on treating obesity or covering it on reality TV, not preventing it or educating on it with a mind to prevent it. When it has been, gains have been mitigated by other effects. Iowa, for example, has a powerful corn lobby that is not going to be interested in allowing education that depicts HFCS as unhealthy.
