If that picture was taken in the 60s or before, keep in mind those guys didn't have access to the same food supply chain we take for granted nowadays.

They couldn't just cross the street at 10pm and find a stockpile of milk, meat, cheese and eggs at the local supermarket, unless they were living in a really big city like New York or Chicago. Not even chicken was as widely available. My dad is in his 60s and when he was young it was common for grandma to go to the local street market and buy a live chicken to eat. The whole preparation involved peeling, de-feathering and it took hours. Milk was delivered once a day tops and it was non-homogenized so she had to boil it several times at home etc.

Currently there are a lot of styles that look good and are considered modern, just google men's fashion or look to celebrities. Just pick some styles you like and go with it.
