See, the problem with cutting it out that late into the sentence is that everything has already been uttered. "Mem" is pronounced differently that "meme" that is true, but if the joke is that there is a person saying it (or at least that one is supposed to read it - in their head or outloud (doesn't matter)), their intent was to say "meme." Thus in the imagine scenario, as they utter the sentence, when they say "mem-" it will still be pronounced "meme." It should be cut at "me-" or prior.
