What machines and atmosphere should DYELs look for when picking a gym?
How do they determine which gym to join?

1) If you start with a beginners lifting program like SS or SL, you should make sure the gym has free weights so you can do squats and deadlifts and so on with a barbell and plates.
2) Machines I guess just take a tour of the gym and see if they have a decent selection
3) Atmosphere: Preferably the gym doesn't get too busy. And has people who can help you if you need assistance with something.
4) Lastly, just make sure it's reasonably affordable

Thanks. I'm still trying to overcome my social anxiety, so I'm looking for a gym which doesn't get too busy, not only for practical means.
Copied from a post i made somewhere else
-Hours of operation, don't get a gym only open when you're at work
-Busiest hours, and how they coincide with your free time
-General attitude, most gyms have a culture, and sometimes that means people teaming up on equipment and sometimes it means everyone pointedly ignoring everyone else
-Availability/cost of personal training sessions and group training sessions(as well as nutritional help!)
-Ammenities: some gyms have a pool, some have a sauna. Both things are cool to have if you're willing to pay
-Cleanliness of facilities: particularly locker rooms.
-Equipment available: the actual exercise stations as well as whether they provide lifting belts, weighted belts, chalk, straps, etc
-Personal equipment policies: some gyms don't let you have chalk
-Dress code: some gyms don't allow tank tops, short shorts, hats, etc

if they don't have a place to deadlift, or a squat rack...you're in trouble. a bunch of machines and very few free weights is a red flag.
i wanna open a gym where the radio is heavy metal all day erryday and its 65 F and no faggy bullshit. oh and strippers in cages that you can do power poses in front of and they compliment you, thus raising test

honestly I started at planet fitness. Smith machine is fine to start with. Plenty of cuties/fatties to entertain your eyes between sets

I'm considering starting at YMCA. It's one of the closest gyms to my home, and I feel it won't be too intimidating for a DYEL.
