In my case I had gotten sick and couldn't eat for two days right after bench press so I'm attributing it to that. Hope I can get that 3x5 next session, been stuffing my face all week.

Whenever you fail reps your last 2 sets, drop the weight 10% the next workout, dont change the set/rep scheme. Focus on moving the bar as fast as you can for each repetition.

The following workout try 225 for 5x5 again.

You dont want to train to grind things out, you dont want to train to fail. You want to train smooth, fluid, explosive movements.

Dang, that's how most of my bench reps go. The last rep is always slow as fuck to the point where sometimes people start randomly walking over to me.

222.5lbs for sets of 5 for like three weeks, finally can do one set of 225x5 and then I can pump out 225x3x5 like it's nothing one week later.
It's 99% mental once you get close enough.

Seriously, the best thing you can do is train and leave a rep in the tank. Its better to walk out of the gym knowing that your new 5 rep max is actually a solid six reps. You wont struggle as much to recover from leaving a rep in the tank, either.
