Plg time line from an oldfag who has never tripped:

2013 - PLG was born, many new trips, some would come to pass.

2014 - PLG picks up in popularity, any trips still around from the beginning were about to stay around for a while. More posters, amateur but decent advice, and heavy lifting was had.

EARLY 2015 - PLG is at its peak, but not for long. An eventful year for PLG, threads was fast, popularity was at its peak and general culture was rich. The trip selection was at its best and the memes were great.

Late 2015 - with peak comes decline. Rapid decline.

2016 - we don't talk about this era

2017 - only recoverable if trappy dies in a freak accident

Unfortunately we use the same name to describe two different lifts.
Classic box squats (what you described)
Westside box squats (what he did)

The westside box squat removes the stretch reflex by adding collision, and puts your body in a position where the centre of mass is behind your feet.

This means two things:
- Develops more explosiveness off the bottom of the squat, and power production in general (since muscles are going from relaxed/static to an explosive dynamic). Slightly more effective for this than paused squats, since it adds collision.
- Your torso can go to more horizontal angles, putting more emphasis on your glutes and hamstrings, and your shins can be more vertical, putting less stress on your knee.

Classic box squats is mostly used for technique improvement.

As for the squats, SSBs and FS put more emphasis on your back than back squats. Highbar squats and lowbar squats are better to develop the quads.

They are useful to increase power production, so as accessory.

Since raw squats are limited by your quads, it ends up not being very benefitial to change the focus to your hips.
However, one can still do it in a way that's similar to the raw squat, with the centre of gravity at the middle of the feet. This means more quad and back demand, making it more useful for raw lifters.

It can also be useful to train through knee injuries.

Basically, while people are worried about meaningless things like chromosomes or genitals, the IOC is worried about protecting the actual integrity of the sports. Even if that means restricting women from competing against women.

tl;dr: According to the IOC, trans competing with cis is fair, and genetically hyperandrogenic cis (and trans) competing against cis and trans is not fair. This is what makes actual sense and is not based on irrational fears.
