Why do modern running shoes have a raised heel? What benefit does this offer over running shoes with flat soles?
The entire sole is thick and raised but it's flat from the tip to the heel. The design on the exterior just makes it seem like the heel is raised.

for making you dependent on raised heels for running.
It probably also forces a more upright posture when running so that would suit formerly sedentary people who didn't grow up running/walking barefoot.

Ever had shin splints, OP?
Acceptable way for manlets to get an extra inch or two
Running in shoes is bad for your joints, takes the force ofo of the ball of your foot rocking back to the heel(having your legs work like a shock absorber/spring) and puts it onto heel first then to the ball of your foot which tends to make your leg straighter apon impact with that force going through your body instead of being dissipated when you take your next step.
Running barefooted>running in shoes

you don't have to run barefoot to avoid the problems with running shoes. Just get flat, flexible and minimalist shoes like converse or feiyues.
