ideally you should do both. you could try alternating heavy and light days or warm up to something really heavy, then do lighter sets with more volume.

what worked best for me was moving to an upper/lower split and lifting every other day- no cardio. being on a deficit affected my recovery time so i would do a push movement followed by a pull movement. that way i could recover more between exercises and my lifts didnt suffer as much.

Im 5'11, ~165lbs about 20%BF right now. I havent worked out in about 2 years.

I want to cut down to 150lb so i dont feel like shit about myself, and then start slow bulking.
I dont think i'll make too many gains while cutting so i was gonna go for volume; something like 3x10-15
For routine, i was thinking like a 3 day split, twice a week; basically ABCABCx
A-Chest, Tris
B-Back, Bis
C-Shoulder, legs

Also, was gonna do a ~500daily cal deficit and add cardio 4x a week. I'm aiming for around 2lbs of weight loss a week.

Is this a good idea?
I wanna cut down fast so i can start working out properly; should be done in 1-2months.

You have 12 weeks meaning a loss of ~2lbs per week = ~7000 calorie deficit over the course of the week, or -1000 per day.
In simple terms, through diet + cardio you need to be 1,000 calories below your TDEE every day for the next 12 weeks. Possible, but only for someone with extremely good discipline.

I have been eating a calculated diet and steadily losing weight every single day.

And 1-two days ago, I gained 4 lbs, of water, I assume, and it will NOT go away. What the fuck? Water weight goes away?

It was a +500 refeed. Why the fuck do I have 4 lbs of water gained?

I have counted every calorie and weighed every scrap, why did this happen to me?

Anyways, today marks day 1 of PMSF. Will run for a few weeks. I am going to get super lean and then maintain and then bulk.

The scale is a low priority reference point. Start caring less about what the scale says and more about what you see in the mirror/pics. Unless for some reason at this point in the year you plan on being shirtless in public a lot, IMO you are already lean enough and should be concentrating on slowly adding mass via a lean bulk @ +300cals/day, not spinning your wheels in a deficit losing more muscle than fat, or at best recomping at a snails pace.

I'm very unhappy with my bf % and unhappy with my body in general and it would be good for my mental health to get shredded.

I was in your place man, I know the feels. My first year I thought being shredded was the most important factor to being aesthetic so I crash dieted down to 125lbs. Ended up looking like an emaciated marathon runner, not a good look. That 125lb pic >>40156752 was only a couple months into lifting, not the full first year. I mistook the first priority as getting shredded so I did that crash diet first. I should have been eating in a surplus and milking newbgains during that time.

Attached pic is the full year 1 timeline, could have made more progress if I didn't waste those initial months cutting. Basically made every mistake in the book...the initial crash diet, then eatbiggetbig slingshot up 35lbs, then slowly got a better grasp on planning controlled bulks/cuts/recomps. As you can see in the last pic, end of year 1 still wasn't anything incredible, but for normie standards who think Brad Pitt in Fight Club was RIPPED it was ok.

There's nothing wrong with bulking or cutting at some arbitrary weight, it's about bodyfat. It doesn't matter if you are 5'11 200lbs, you can bulk if you are lean. Doesn't matter if you're 165 If you look like a marshmellow you should cut

It's practically a right of passage to do your own thing despite what /fit/ says. When I posted up those pics from early year 1 I thought I was looking awesome but /fit/ were the ones to reality check me real hard. Same happened last year when I had made good gains during year 2 but my chest was obviously way behind (see pic). Finally getting that up to par this year thanks to a new chest routine + 9month marathon bulk. Wouldn't be possible if I tried to stay as lean as this pic from summer the whole time.

So long as you have thick skin and take feedback with an open mind, /fit/'s advice can actually be useful when you figure out who's just here to troll vs who's here to help others and have actual experience in dieting/lifting.
