sup /fit/. if i'm cutting, should I eat at a deficit or could I instead just eat at maintenance then do an hour of cardio to make a 400-calorie deficit? is there any real difference?
Do both

It's easier and takes less time to cut your calorie intake than it is to do more cardio.
Let's say an hour of cardio burns 500 calories. That's like not drinking 3 sodas or picking a healthier meal option.
fatass just eat at a deficit and exercise. losing weight is 85% diet and 15% exercise

sounds good but does one approach actually have any benefits (other than increased cardiovascular health) over the other or is any deficit as good as any other?

Fixing your diet and counting your calories means you have an actual number to work off of. If you're just doing cardio and eating normally then you're going to reach a point where you'll have to do more and more cardio daily to lose weight whereas you can just lower your food intake and adjust from there.
Cardio for fitness/heart health
Diet for the caloric deficit
If the first helps with the second, it's a bonus
