COMBAT SPORTS GENERAL

>Why start learning?
Defend yourself without going to court for a manslaughter charge.
It's fun as fuck, and a way to entertain yourself without vidya.
It's non-boring cardio.

>What start learning?
If you're interested in striking arts, try boxing, or Muay Thai if you're less interested in mobility, head movement, but more interested in learning elbows, knees, and kicks.

>But grappling?
BJJ schools are the easiest to come by, but wrestling is going to give you the most control on the ground, while also letting you decide to stay standing if you don't want to be taken down.

Catch wrestling is for sick cunts, if you can find a gym for it.
http://snakepitusa.com/about-us/locations/

>LIFTING FOR COMBAT SPORTS
You're going to want to develop explosive ability for high reps, especially in your lower body. Do something like Westside for Skinny Bastards III
https://www.defrancostraining.com/westside-for-skinny-bastards-part3/
That's
MONDAY – Max-Effort Upper Body
TUESDAY – Dynamic-Effort Lower Body
WEDNESDAY – Off
THURSDAY – Repetition Upper Body
FRIDAY – Max-Effort Lower Body
SATURDAY – Off
SUNDAY – Off

Be wary of pseudoscience regarding martial arts (not just trad martial art kata faggotry).
While routines with high-volume pull ups and dips have their uses, even Western boxers are notorious for things like chugging their own piss.

I do in Judo. Haven't competed in BJJ since before I hit Masters, costs 10 times more than a Judo comp.
>>
>>40126315
>costs 10 times more than a Judo comp
Oh, I agree. Paying over a hundred dollars for a tournament is way too much if you've got to travel, find a place to stay for 2-3 days, etc
>>
>>40126478
Luckily I live in a small country where I can't drive 10km without ending up in a village with a dojo, and there's at least one tournament a month for €2.5 - close to where I live to boot. Even for BJJ competitions I hardly ever have to travel more than 2-3 hours, but even the small ones cost €25-30 nowadays, knockout style. Hating how BJJ is viewed as a way to make money even by non-professionals.

>>40127084
For schools I know this often to be the case here in Europe, yet they still charge easily double or triple what the average Judo club charges due to lacking organisation.

Tournaments, on the other hand, are cash cows. Ran with volunteers in same way in the same places as other grappling sports, but at several times the price while I know for a fact the averge Judo tournament here is profitable.

there is a lot of sweaty skin on skin and people get bruises and cuts and bleed and that can get in your cuts or eyes.

General info post here.

Dedicated grappler of 4 years here. 4 years judo & wrestling, 2 years bjj.

For any level of self defense, I would chose judo for beginners. Throws on concrete, even a gym floor are devastating. Basic leg sprawl defense (any good judo school does no gi work, and leg attacks) is enough defense against any untrained leg rush, and if you're fighting a trained fighter on the street, you shouldn't be. You should be friends.

What I don't like is new wrestlers shooting outside of a mat, especially while in jeans or what have you can bash your knee in real sorts of good.
Bjj teaches very few takedowns, and focuses on fighting from the bottom (in the vast majority of schools) and IRL situations fighting from the bottom is a very bad idea.

Experienced judoka have all wrestled (if you're worth your salt you cross train)
One of America's best gyms, Mayo Quanchi, has their kids wrestling and playing judo from youth, and produce abnormally amazing results. So you tend to get dozens of fast ways to drive people into the ground, and have your wrist, elbow, and shoulder subs along with chokes. Fighting from the top is always better than the bottom on hard surfaces. Being stacked in guard on asphalt is a lot worse than on a mat. Give it a try.

Wing chun
>>
>>40127493
Wrestling outside of school is the best advice anyone can give you, not just tournaments but practice. If you cant find or get to one go on YouTube and watch videos to learn form. Pick one shot (throws and trips don't count), one escape, one top move and practice them 100 times a day by yourself. Once you've mastered those continue to practice them but also add moves to your arsenal one at a time. Also if you don't already have a good stance that's vital.
>>
>>40136148
>Taekwondo
A huge number of techniques are useless as soon as you can use your hands. Find a kickboxing class and talk to the teacher, go over what you know with them and talk about how effective it is, practice with them in sparring. You'll find which techniques work for you and which don't.
>Taekwondo for mid range

>>40134452
Bruce Lee was 58kg and would beat people, routinely, twice his weight.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQIm9gnH8TM
Another example of how skill, in sufficient quantity, beats power. There is a saying at my gym that "40lb of muscle is a belt." Power is important, but so is the skill of the practitioner.

>>40134326
Well, most traditional arts have limited help to do with guns. But Wing Chun (or Vin Tsun) is good for people lacking huge muscles and they have a lot of good knife disarming. Krav Maga is the authority on gun disarming.
If you want something ultra practical overall go for JKD (Jeet Kune Do.)

>>40131799
The best art for self-defense is triathlons and park core, you can always get away. There is no best martial art for self-defense. BJJ shits the bed as soon as you have more than one opponent. Against one though it's great. (I've done two years of BJJ)

>>40129250
It's more of a philosophy of how to approach training and developing yourself than a set of techniques like other arts. The number of teachers certified is very few, but it's what MMA would be if MMA didn't have rules. The fusion of every effective martial art into a style that is not restricted by rules. IMO the student that followed Bruce's legacy the most closely is Dan Inosanto, look him up.

I want to start looking boxing for fun in the TV, which guys should i look closely for fun matches and info?
>>
Ok guys i'm a small man 5'7 that's somehow built 176lb 14% bodyfat, I live in manletland though

I do mostly weighted calisthenics work in the gym, i have good numbers (66lb weighted pull ups and 110lb weighted dips, both for 4-5 reps) and can pull off some gymnastic moves like handstand push ups and levers

I want something for self defence so I get better confidence on my skills, I don't plan fighting anybody but in my belief it's something you should have

I also want to do sparring because i'm a believer that fighting should be practiced to get better at it

What I should do? Kickboxing is good? Wing Chun? pls respond
>>
>>40139729
>sparring
>wing chun

Pick one.

Judo/bjj/wrestling are good if you want grappling, boxing/muay thai/kick boxing for striking
>>
>>40139729
>i'm a believer that fighting should be practiced to get better at it

Absolutely, Bruce Lee said: “A fighter who
trains without sparring is like a swimmer who hasn’t immersed in the water,”

With that in mind, I'd say there are three ranges to train, striking, trapping, and grappling.

Muay Thai is usually easy to find a gym for and is very good for striking, Wing Chun is very good for trapping, and BJJ (also easy to find a gym for) is very good for grappling.

If you absolutely have to pick one, however, I would suggest wing chun as it has a non-sport focus but maintains sparring.

>>40139780
I have no idea where you got this impression from, I have trained at three separate Wing Chun Dojo's and all have included a heavy emphasis on sparring.

Anybody have success using their head to tag the opponent's liver when doing a double-leg takedown? Obviously this only works if you're right-handed.

Isn't wrong, what he suggests requires a lot of coordination and a series of techniques that you only having done it for a week almost certainly haven't developed yet.

With that in mind, I'd suggest an Ezekiel choke.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KH3_cssqc-U
The above is a good short summary, you can do this when you are in someone's guard and when you have mounted someone. When in position simply push them away from you and the choke will complete. Ask your teacher to go over it with you briefly, they'll help in the physical way youtube can't quite manage.

Good luck!

Ezekiels can also catch higher belts that get too comfortable with you in their guards!
>>
>>40142152
you can't ezekiel from the guard stop giving him false hope
>>
>>40142168
You totally can, but you absolutely shouldn't rely on it.

I use it more often than usual, and from experience I'd say it's fine from a dominant position. It's almost equally fine if you're almost in a dominant position (half guard/almost passed/...) but
>bail if you start losing position without it in place
>feel free to hold it if it's in place and you know you can hold it
The latter is when you can choke through guard or from underneath mount. Setting it up from a bad position only works when your opponent lapses.

im excited for this fight, maybe its possible to find a stream or maybe someone will save the video and upload it?

I think Rodolfo Vieira is a fucking beast and if he can mantain his cool and take his opponent down he will win. His opponent has to beat the shit out of him like ronda vs holmes

i joined my bjj school because a bleck belt. ibjjf world champion and former brazilian top team member from Brazil is the coach, and someone with these qualifications is hardly to be found in germany

However, probably 60% of the class is drilling techniques from the bottom position like guard submissions, spider guard, lasso guard and such. His whole game is very bottom heavy and that`s what he teaches us.

But i want to learn how to take someone down, dominate him, be on top of him able to punch him or stand up or kick him while he's down OR go for a submission.

Should i join a gym with a lower skilled coach that has more of a self-defense style bjj or is it better to suck up all knowledge on the bjj sports style as long as i have access to someone of his skill?
>>
>>40142929
Stick with the gym if it is a good learning atmosphere. Brazilian Top Team guys were MMA: there's no way he doesn't have a good deal of wrestling in that brain of his. If need be, ask him after class if he can teach you takedowns and an aggressive top game.

Chances are he'll say something like "you need to learn how to win from bottom before learning how to win from top" (Brazilians are very traditional like that at times), but be a good student and form a good relationship with your coach and you are bound to learn.

high school wrestler here about to join a BJJ gym

i trained at it before like once a week for 3 weeks but my dad died and i stopped going

can somebody give me tips for how to do well? I kept slipping out of my gi (im not sure exactly how keep that shit tied up, and my belt always comes undone) can somebody provide a good vid as a baseline?
>>
Joined a new gym recently and found out that they have free boxing classes and a boxing club with comps.
Went to one of the classes today.
They also have bjj and maybe muay thai classes but those cost extra.

I like what >>40143111 this guys is saying, but consider cross training in Judo too, Germany has a good Judo reputation and some really high class coaches and fighters over there. Get the best of both worlds.
>>
>>40143126
Posture and a stable base are your most important and developed tools as it is, combined with a pressure heavy top game as long as you don't dive into someone's guard. Plenty of yt tutorials on how to tie belt and gi. Just don't watch the BJJ belt tie tutorials. Nobody in BJJ can properly tie a belt. The knowledge has simply been lost.

Started BJJ yesterday; session is basically:
> Warmup
> Drilling of a technique
> Practicing technique on partner
> Rolling for a few rounds

Is this normal? I also don't have a fucking clue what I'm doing during rolling, I just seem to keep trying to get a mount on people. Any tips for beginners?
>>
>>40143630
Pretty normal class yeah.

Beginner tips
>don't spaz
>don't muscle
>don't be a limp rag
>tap early, tap often
>stick to techniques you know for now
>>
>>40143630
Also stay tight, if you leave your arms far away from your body for too long or your neck exposed for too long you'll get submitted. Learning when you can expose yourself will come with time and experience.
