Does sodium cause visible water retention, particularly in the face?
I always hear that sodium would make one look "bloated" or "puffy" but have never seen photos to prove this (for example before and after a high sodium meal).
If it does have an effect, what body fat % would this be noticeable at?
Is this something only very lean, competitive lifters should be thinking about? I'm only talking about the aesthetic effects of sodium here, not health effects.
Wjhen there's an excess of sodium but a lack of other balancing electrolytes, kidneys produce aldosterone, which through complex processes dictate how much sodium is in the bloodstream and how much potassium you're excreting, furthering the imbalance and causing water retention in order to maintain the electrolytes you do have.
Make sure you get enough k and mag with sodium.

do you think it causes a visible difference ? like a puffy face? or softer looking abs
I've been eating a pack of shin ramyun for dinner for the last week instead of my usual crb because I don't want to throw it out, so I've been over the rdi for sodium quite a bit, when I'm usually under it.
With no other changes to diet (calories stayed the same, but carbs went way up) or exercise, my weight went up ~2lbs and I feel more bloated. I think it's mostly in my gut.

Duh absolutely.

theoretically yes, but individual variation plays a role here

did you notice any differences in the mirror?

the reason I ask is because I cant find any images online of a before vs after high sodium diet.. which shouldnt be hard to do as the photos can be taken like 2/3 days apart

My lower gut is the only area affected. I'm skellymode, so the bloating is a kinda obvious but with more mass I don't think there'd be much difference. What ab definition I have is still there.
My jaw muscles still stand out and my vascularity is unchanged.

I've never had a water retention problem and I eat about 3x the recommended intake. I also drink 2 gallons of water a day which may also be a factor.
