When should I start adding weight? Right now I do 3 sets unweighted, approx:
>6 wide
>6 neutral
>7 chins
But my pull downs are only around 85lbs (170 lbs bodyweight)

Straight away
Strength is best built with low reps, so if you want to get stronger to do more pull ups. Add weight now.

get to 12 reps of all, then do 8 reps with weight. work up to 12 then add weight and go to 8.
unless you just want to get stronk then add weight now and try to do 3-5 reps. work up to 8 then add weight and drop to 3-5.

when i started i could do 10 unweighted chinups.
then i tried to add 1kg each workout and aimed for around 15 total reps. some days i'll do 3x5, others 4x4 or even 5x3. doesn't matter as long as i hit that target and it's been working so far and i'm progressing quite nicely. currently at 45 kg.
Can do 90# for 5 reps. Probably 40? or so without weight. Start light and work your way up. I usually pyramid them. 10, 5, 5, 10 then move on. Deadlifts will help with pullups too.
For reference - 6'3 185# lanklet
What's a good belt? The top rated one on amazon looks like it breaks at 55lbs.
I don't need anything industrial strength, but I'd like to get to 2 plates at least

I was only ever doing weighted chinups, started adding weight when I got to 3 sets of 6. Got to around 20 kg for said reps, then changed gyms and kinda switched to lat pulldown machine. Weighted chinups/pullups will really give you monster strenght and size on lats, not so much in biceps tho coz mine was always shitty.
