So does exercise and getting into shape actually have mental health benefits, /fit/? A lot of websites and brochures and the like say that exercising improves memory, concentration and mood, among other things. Is this really the case?
>>
I feel better mentally. I wouldn't say any smarter or better at concentrating though, but I was never a twitching sperg to begin with.
>>
Supposedly exercise is a good treatment for ADHD and depression, but if /fit/ is any indication that's a damn fucking lie
>>
>>40027826
Nope.

>Regular exercise is associated with reduced anxious and depressive symptoms in the population at large, but the association is not because of causal effects of exercise.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18678794

>Exercise participation is associated with higher levels of life satisfaction and happiness. This association is non-causal and appears to be mediated by genetic factors that influence both exercise behavior and well-being.

It is a lie.

What possible reason could you have to think that it wouldn't?

The brain is as much a part of the body as the muscles and organs.

It's the primary treatment for depression and anxiety, to name but a few. It also increases blood flow to the brain, produces the highest measured increase in IQ we've observed, and plenty other shit.

People need to stop treating the brain like it's anything other than another specialised organ.
>>

>produces the highest measured increase in IQ we've observed
Are you claiming that exercise increases IQ?
>>
>>40027826
It fits well with many branches of the medical field, anything biological really.

You would have to realize this: For millions of years we have been moving, running and generally doing "sports" as animals, then as human formlike things.

Now all these biological systems were created around this movement. So what do you think happens when you start to stand still, and radically do something that your species hasnt done in millions of years, that of leading a sedentary life...

Yea of course its going to be bad you mongoloid.
>>
>>40027826
This is probably the biggest change you can get with "exercise" simply moving, doing things like HIIT will increase test.
>>
>>40028796
It produces the biggest measurable change in IQ through natural means that we're aware of, yes.
>>
>>40028829
This.

In the past we believed early homo-sapiens and neanderthals were less intelligent than us, more recent analysis shows the complete opposite- that we've been actively getting stupider in most ways for thousands of years. Particularly in memory, identification and motor functionality, but plenty others, purely because we're not using the same parts of our body as we were.
>>
>>40029190
Source because I'm pretty sure that's bullshit.
>>
>>40029253
Then don't believe it. Otherwise go read a fucking study or two by googling.
>>
>>40029280
I already did, that's why I'm pretty sure it's bullshit. The studies that look at exercise and IQ either don't prove that there is an increase in IQ, don't prove that the increase is causally linked, or don't test the IQ of the test subjects before conducting the study.
Alternatively, some studies show improved cognition, which isn't the same as improved IQ.
>>
>>40029352
because clinical studies study effects on the body, not test scores

If you're this dumb you're not going to make much of a difference by increasing your IQ anyway
>>
>>40029406
>because clinical studies study effects on the body, not test scores
You can't possibly be this stupid. How do you think psychometricians measure IQ, if not by scores from certain tests?
You can't scan a brain and conclude that somebody's IQ was increased from X to Y.
>>
>>40029460
>You can't possibly be this stupid. How do you think psychometricians measure IQ, if not by scores from certain tests?
Are you being purposefully dense or just edgy? I genuinely can't tell. The function of an IQ test is to group peoples intelligence into quotients based on markers for intelligence and, like you say, in part correlating to tests and studies of the brain

>You can't scan a brain and conclude that somebody's IQ was increased from X to Y.
Literally the point I just made. Clinical trials and studies of the brain and brain function don't care about IQ. Read before you get edgy and shitpost.
