I once dated this really beautiful girl. She was very thin and had a gorgeous face, plus her dad was loaded, so she had a brand new car and tons of great clothes. Her family was quite dysfunctional, as it was all girls and no man in the house. Dad lived with his new wife in a mansion some hours away.

I was dating her for 9 months when she got paralyzed from the waist down. I spent a week carrying her to and from the hospital, lifting her to the washroom, lifting her to and from her hospital bed. They flew her to a bigger hospital in a larger city where a specialist was able to perform the surgery she needed.

So I loaded up this shitty truck I owned with a week's worth of clothes and drove, with summer tires on, down a super dangerous highway in a fucking blizzard for like 4 hours. I could easily have slid off the road and died, but I ended up making it there OK.

I spent the next four days sleeping in the hospital room with her while she was in post-surgery pain. It was constant pain for her. I tried to be supportive but I think I came off as a dick sometimes - Always nagging her to read books and try to stay off of her smartphone in order to keep her spirits up. She was almost apathetic to her situation, it was like learned helplessness. Meanwhile I was changing clothes inside my single cab truck in this underground parking lot and sleeping in the hospital room.

I had to leave while she was still in rehab. I broke up with her because I realized there was no future for us, and I wasn't married to the girl. I've left the city we met in and started a life somewhere else. I can see on social media that she's not going to get her legs back.
