So multiple people - of unknown knowledge and skill, it should be mentioned - have insisted to me that because the hamstrings are a two-part muscle, you WILL develop imbalances without a knee flexion exercise, including but not limited to leg curls and GHRs.

This means that while hamstring-driven hip extension is necessary, it is not sufficient for avoiding injury or having a balanced routine.

Thoughts? For the record I am unsure.

according to candito's video with bret cont contreras, sumo deadlift develops the glutes about as much as the conventional, but does anyone know about the upper back, the core and the hamstrings?
>>
>>39977250

Well hammies are hip extensors and knee flexors, so if you ignore one its roles it'll likely end up causing problems down the line. Adding in some leg curls or GHR is an easy addition that'll keep em healthy. Plus most people need more hamstring work anyways.
>>
>>39977487

Less/less/roughly equal, to my knowledge.
>>
>>39977490

ye but the knee flexor component is trained isometrically, the discussion is probably more along the lines of asking if that's enough. My gym only has somewhere to do nordic curls, can't do GHR or leg curls (shitty gym)
>>
>>39977487
is this a newish video? link?
>>
>>39977250

Makes some sense. The big issue is that one of the four hamstring heads is solely a knee flexor since it inserts below the hip joint, so it gets basically no work from hip extension. It's also the one that tends to be most involved in knee stabilisation.

So while not necessary, it's probably in the same category as remembering to do your curls for elbow health.
>>
>>39977506

that's basically the conclusion I've arrived at too. Oddly this seems to be very infrequently discussed when people talk about knee health though (in my experience anyway having researched that shit for years after my surgery)

m8 I am fully planning to enjoy the next year by renting a high rise apartment downtown, going to the nearby gym after work, and coming home to dank music, ps4, and relaxing in the hot tub. Most of it will be alone, but I'm in meetings all day anyway so I don't think I'll mind.
>>
>>39977722
That's very nice, and I wish you well, but I've been alone for a long time and it's taken its toll on me.
>>
>>39977734

there are a few ways in my experience to make friends when you don't really have any (e.g. moving to new city)

1. join a small-ish gym built around, e.g. powerlifting, where you'll see the same regulars. You can then hang out with them. First it's grabbing lunch after lifting on Saturdays, then maybe going out for kbbq after work, then laser tag or some shit

2. join a sports team or club. This is enforced cameraderie

3. go back to university and live in a share house (or just live in a share house)
>>
>>39977747
It's more that I can't leave my current friend group, and I dislike all of them. I'm in my finals years of school, and I'm stuck with friends I made when I was desperate.

I can't leave, there's nobody else to go to, and they wouldn't leave me alone if one day I just got up and tried to leave.

I hate most of them so much though
>>
>>39977759

hang out with them less and less, then. Eventually 'breaking up' becomes easy because you barely see them anymore. Plus, it's pretty easy to just go hang out with other people in the ways I mentioned without leaving a friends group
>>
>>39977772

I'll just say that it seems logical to me, and in line with the idea that pulling and pressing in multiple directions will keep the shoulders healthier compared to only e.g. bench and pullups would.

This was also the reason Avon considered dropping GHRs in favour of hip extension exercises too, way back when. His rationale was that it would help his powerlifts more. Don't know what he eventually did, tho.

To the best of my knowledge, isometric training does very little for strength and hypertrophy. I have a pic about isometric holds and how they transfer to strength in that position, but not on this computer, and it's not really the isometric you're talking about, I guess.

I wish I had access to a MRI and get a professor to supervise the study needed to solve this.

The thing is, hip extension trains all the hamstring muscles - biceps, semimembranosus, semitendinosus, adductor. So in theory there's no need to train knee flexion as well, just like you can train your chest exclusively with transverse flexion and no adduction and still have all results you can.

However, as we know, the short head of the biceps doesn't go all the way to the hips. It only performs knee flexion. And since it has its own innervation, it isn't very active in deadlifts and squats besides stabilizing.

But, even though it's a separate head, it's still the same muscle. And we know that just by training the triceps in one of your arms, the other arm will grow as well to some extent. Since it's still the same muscle, the expectation is that the short head will see substantial growth and strengthening even though it's never trained directly.

This means that, in theory, the short head of the biceps can be weaker and smaller if you never train knee flexion... Or maybe not. Or maybe the difference exists but it's small. We don't know for certain.

What we know is that training hip extension only is sufficient to avoid most injuries, including the most common sprinting injuries (as they happen mainly to the long head of the biceps). Hip extensions is pretty much the main functions of all hamstrings except the short head of the biceps, so in theory training only hip extension might (or might not) make them overall grow more and be stronger.

---------------------------------

BUUUUUUUT, that is only the tip of the iceberg my dudes (as if we didn't have enough unknown information on this).

The thing is, even during exercises of knee extension and hip extension, the hamstrings are "performing knee flexion". Actually, they're performing KNEE EXTENSION, with the same tendons and non-spanning muscle fibres involved in doing knee flexion. (continuing next post)

literally none of this matters.

if you're a powerlifter, do lots of hip extension work (you're not using the hamstrings to curl your knee at all, and if you are it's counterproductive). a bit of leg curling work is fine too just for muscular growth. but it's not specific.

you won't get injured from not doing leg curls. don't worry.

if you're a bodybuilder, I'd reccomend doing both to work the hamstrings from both ends. I am CERTAIN that curling the knee vs extending the hip will have different demands on the heads of the hamstrings for each. trust me. and the short head of the biceps femoris will probably be left untouched.

powerlifter > don't worry about it. do leg curls if you want. I'd worry about doing too much leg curling over anything.

bodybuilder > do leg curls, asshole.
>>
I want to have sex with a certain swede.
>>
>>39977250
>>39979221

(continuing the crazy shit)

This is due to what we call "passive tendon action", which allows what we call "Lombard Paradox" to happen in motions of knee+hip extensions like squats.

Basically what it says is:
If a two-joint muscle A is paired by a reverse two-joint muscle B...
(A=extension X, flexion Y)
(B=flexion X, extension Y)

... And A has a stronger moment arm at joint X than on joint Y, and B has a stronger moment arm at joint Y than on joint X, those muscles can work together in a way that muscle A (and B) can perform the inverse function in the joint Y (X for B).

Let me try to explain again,
Hamstrings are a two-joint muscle, and their pair, the Rectus Femoris, is also a two-joint muscle.
The hamstrings are stronger hip extensors than knee flexors.
RFs are stronger knee extensors than hip flexors.

That means that when the hamstrings and the RF work together in a movement that requires extension at both joints, like squat or deadlift, the hamstrings perform KNEE EXTENSION and the RF performs HIP EXTENSION, due to them having the weaker moment arm at that joints - thus being affected by the passive tendon action of both of the muscles.
(pic related)

So you ARE training "knee flexion strength" of the hamstrings when you squat and deadlift, paradoxically enough.

Now we get to the next mystery...

Even though the Biceps is a single muscle, the short head is a single-joint muscle. Theoretically, it shouldn't be affected by the Paradox, and thus cannot perform knee extension.
But the truth is, we haven't had conclusive information on this.

Can the short head perform knee extension torque despite not being two-jointed, simply for being the same muscle as the long head which is two-jointed?

What we know is, with EMG (which is NOT VERY ACCURATE AT ALL BTW) we know that the short head IS ACTIVE to some extent. Is this simply stabilization? Is this the body working against itself? Or is it helping knee extension?

Who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

All of this matters to a big extent, are you kidding me?

Information on these things has been changing the way we train all the time.

The more information we have, the better the training can be. The better the training can be, the more results and less injuries we should have.

If we never try to explain these things and learn how they work, we will never be able to truly UNDERSTAND TRAINING ITSELF!

You might dismiss this with "this is only 4chan lmao what does it matter". But what you would be missing is that here on this very general we have people on the cutting edge of both competitive lifting and when it comes to science of lifting and training theory.
Some of these people we share the space with have been changing the landscape of training and of powerlifting competitions already.

I won't name names, but I'm not speaking lightly when I affirm this.

a) simply explain to me how this has any practical implication on training. do leg curls once and a while, sure.

b) I'd like a link to those studies please. and I'm not sure why you're using this as reasoning. you're saying "if you train your left tricep, your right tricep will grow, so if you train your hamstring in hip extension, and even if only 3/4 of the heads are used, the 4th head will grow" which makes very little sense.

c) I wrote this out and it got erased. I'll just sum it.up:

what you're saying has no.fucking value, except for.fivomg biomechanics nerds something to jerk off. too. do leg curls every once and a while. yippee!

>simply explain to me how this has any practical implication on training

Some of the people here are on the cutting edge of strength training theory. These people have already been directly responsible for training methods to start changing in the past few years and specially nowadays.

It might not have a direct implication to you, but it will have an implication to the science people, and the science people have an implication on how you train.

>I'd like a link

Literally two seconds on scholar.google.com

>has no fucking value

Except some of the things discussed here on /fit/ have already been affecting some of the big websites that people go to when they want to know why and how they should train.

Dismiss all you want, but as I said, some of the people that post here are at the very top of competitive powerlifting and at the very cutting edge of strength training theory.

They're the three most popular lifts outside of weightliftin

Way back when, there was weighlifting, the sport. Some people held for-fun competitions where they did the 'odd lifts' usually featuring back squat, dead lift, bench press and the curl but could be anything. The SBD were the most popular and so whole federations started to cater to people who wanted to do those lifts, but not weightlifting itself.

You're saying I'm condescending for dealing with blueshoes for like 5 posts?

95% of the people either treat blueshoes like an actual retard or want him to kill himself.

>>39981226

RDLs or TNGDL are much better. SLDLs are a meme imo. Just not a comfortable lift, and difficult to learn how to do it with good form.

And deadlifts already are a primary exercise for the hamstrings. You don't need to try to focus on them even more.
Just my two cents, some people like SLDLs.
>>
>>39981226

Also SLDLs are better avoided if you have SI joint dysfunction.
>>
>>39981226
yes that's fine

i dont think you should do either of them very haevy but especailly not RDL. not hard to injure your back or hamstring doing RDLs very heavy (low reps and close to failure).

i think SLDLs are more specific but i also think they are very awkward. RDLs are a solid excercise to work the hamstrings glutes and low back

Is there a cutoff for what percentages of my maxes I should stay away from when cutting?
>>
>>39981401
Not really. Train like you would normally. I've dropped weigh on Bulgarian.
>>
>>39981407
Alright, I was thinking of repeating a 5/3/1 cycle and seeing if I could maintain strength as my weight went down.
Thing is my training 1RM has caught up and become more or less my real 1RM, so that would mean lifting in the 95% range on a cut.
>>
>bench south of 80%

Gonna have a hard time with this one.
>>
>>39981434
With 5/3/1, I would be careful to not let your training max exceed 95% of your true/estimated 1RM. But that seems like a decent plan, you're probably not going to add much to your lifts, but you should certainly be able to maintain unless you're dropping a lot of weight.

I would recalculate your TM so that you're reasonably sure you'd be good for three reps on your 1s week, you're going to have to do it sooner or later, better now than when you add 10/5/10 and can't get four on your next 5s week.
>>
>>39981466
Yeah I know, but I'm now one cycle away from a squat PR I've been waiting for so I don't want to roll back or start cutting before I hit it.
I was planning to scale back at some point too, yeah. It's getting taxing to lift to close to my 1RMs often, both mentally and physically. I read Beyond 5/3/1 recently and Wendler was talking about hitting 5-8-10 reps on the last sets, and I kinda realized it's been a while since I was at that point.

Any other type of Deadlift. :)

>>39981611

When you keep your legs straight, your hamstrings pull your pelvis back - but your pelvis wants to go forward to follow the movement of the sacrum. This causes irritation in the joint of the pelvis and sacrum, aka the Sacroiliac Joint.

Unlocking your knees means your hamstrings have more "space" to go for at the knee joint, and thus they don't pull your pelvis back against the sacrum and spine position.

Not sure if this is easy to visualise, so let me try to make it more sensible:
You hamstrings can stretch to 6. With knees straight, all the 6 is at the hip joint. This pulls the pelvis too much into a bad position for the SI joint.
When you unlock the knees, it can go 4 pelvis 2 knees, or even 3 pelvis 3 knees. So your pelvis doesn't get fucked over.

During power cleans I'm having some trouble with keeping a rigid back and the result is that my back is sore as shit today. Is this just due to me being inexperienced and it'll be easier to keep it tight over time or should I work on flexibility?
>>
Wait are people actually retarded enough to do SLDLs with straight legs and not just a relatively more open knee angle?

Even if you don't lock your knees at the start and have some give there, it can still be bad if you have SIJ issues. And if you give it enough give... you're just deadlifting.

This doesn't mean SLDL CAUSES SIJ issues. Just that it can aggravate for those that have it.
>>
>>39979696

Wait what the fuck

Did that happen this AGDQ?
>>
>>39982098
No one locks their knees doing SLDL lol

This isn't about locking the knees... For someone with SIJ irritation, 5 to 1 might not be enough give. And if you get to 4 to 2 you're just deadlifting.

I only mentioned locking and unlocking to tell what happens biomechanically. I wasn't implying you lock your knees to SLDL (that would be pretty impressive from a flexibility standpoint).

Think about total stretching capacity of the muscle as a simplified number: 6 for example. Could be 8 or 10 or whatever, I just used 6 for no reason.

If the total is 6, and you bend your back, this number would be divided between the attachments at the pelvis and attachments at the knee.

With the knees locked, they get 0 and all the 6 tension goes to the pelvis. As you unlock your knees and give room for the muscle, the knees go to 1 and the pelvis to 5. A normal deadlift would be at 2 and 4 or 3 and 3, for example.

A 6 or 5 at the pelvis can be bad for someone suffering from SI Joint irritation.

So I did half of my Sheiko

Bench 5x3@80% went well, squat 5x3@80 felt like ass. I couldn't do a triple even though I was able to hit triples with the same weight easily Saturday, so I just did singles and doubles to total 15 reps. I blame it on the gym I was working out at today having shitty equipment and my cut. Oh well, I'll get it next time

I really think I could git gud if I do, I have pinkies at rings now and was super fucking weak off the chest.

Funnily enough though, it seems the only lift I'm really able to grind is bench, both squat and deadlift I either smoked it or outright failed.

do front squats to failure

but there's not way in house for the bench to keep it's stability on chest when you are excercising at incline for the back muscles dont posess stablizing components?

Bench is the easiest lift to grind imo. Do you do any chest/shoulder accessories?

I do what it says on Sheiko beginner. I have benched very narrow pretty much for as long as I've benched, strong arms but really weak off the chest.
