30% of healthy people without any pain at 20yrs have hearniated disk or disk bulge. A lot of people lift with it and have no issue at all.

If it gives you pain then you have to work around it with trial and error. Just see what works and what doesnt.

I have L5 S1 herniated disks and after much trial and error and lots of trying different ways, weights and techniques I have concluded the following you can't do.

Squats
Deads and deadlift variations
Bent over rows
Sit ups/crunches
Leg raises
Skipping
Running
Row machine
Bike machine
Cleans
45 degree Leg press

I have am fine with heavy OHP, shrugs, seated leg press machines and elliptical.

I had mild disk space narrowing in the same spot that now shows as small-moderate herniation. as long as I can remember I've always had lower back pain from running too much, standing in a bent over position, etc. I don't really get back pain from lifting unless I snapped some shit. both parents had back problems as well. doc told me it's hereditary.

I'm going to a specialist in two weeks but today they told me it's all from the pressure you put on your discs, therefore all the exercises where the bar is on your shoulders are a no go. if you keep on putting more weight on your spine you may pop a disc.

Doing normal squats doesn't feel too bad on it I'm thinking about getting a belt for it just in case but I've tried doing leg press instead and it feels like it puts so much more pressure on my spine then squats do.

If you're not in pain than lift as normal just be aware that you are more susceptible to back injury (don't deadlift to technical failure)

Build a strong back and avoid anything with loaded spinal flexion.

Mate if you have no pain yet consider yourself lucky. I have a bulging disc and a herniated disc which were very painful for me. Its taken me about a year to start to get my strength back in the gym.
If you really have no pain, use this as your opportunity to help male your back as healthy as it can be.

Start working on mobility right now. Very tight leg muscles is a major factor in my back so I suggest you start there. Start do exercises to strengthen your posterior chain. Back extensions and hip thrusts are great. Don't forget to hit you core, but be careful because a lot of crunch variations can irritate a bad back.

Do some research into bad movements for your back. I might get flamed, but machines are great if you want to workout around a painful back.
