There was some anon that had a bunch of pads (18 total, I think) and he would take a pad off each side every time he'd deadlift, or something like that. Worked decently well, iirc. I think you'd need to make sure that your positioning is going to be exactly the same is it normally would be during that portion of the lift in order for it to be truly effective though.

It can work, but there's some caveats to it.

One, your form the whole way through has to be consistent. If you start treating the rack pulls using the most optimal rack pull form instead of the one which looks like your actual lockout position, it won't carry over as well.

Two, block or mat pulls work so much better than rack pulls it isn't funny. Do them if you can.

There's multiple ways to program this sort of stuff, but the traditional way is to start with just over your deadlift PR and rep out rather than something that's actually heavy from a high rack pull.

It's the start that's different. With block or mat pulls, the weights are what's in contact with the ground, so as you have slack in the bar like on a regular deadlift and it comes off the ground more like it would when you're pulling from the floor. With the rack, its the bar itself that has all the weight on it so the pull is a little more different. Kind of like the difference between doing board presses versus pin presses.

It's not a huge difference, but it's there. This also tends to make block/mat pulls a little easier to be explosive on.

For non-powerlifting purposes, there's actually a few situations where the rack pull is better suited for carryover. Frex, I compete in strongman from time to time and that often means having the 18' axle deadlift as an event. Since the axles have next to no flex in them and half the time the inner weights are bolted/welded on, that ends up with the rack pulls working more like the main lift than the mat pull does.

The rack pull certainly isn't useless, but god damn is it often misused.

Also Poliquin says that you should do bench and rows or ohp and pullups in an antagonistic fashion eg if you rest 2 minutes between your bench sets you do your bench set, rest a minute, and do a set of rows, then rest another minute and bench.

Apparently it helps with recovery between sets, and I think it actually does, from limited personal experience. I wonder if it could be done with deadlifts and front squats.

I know. Problem is, if I start talking about, say, OHP here, half of replies will be HAHA WTF OHP IS NOT POWERLIFTING :D or CURLS ARE NOT POWERLIFTING (they aren't, but they are still important for things like carrying heavy shit, I do rows, weighted chins, deadlifts but carrying my high test 75kg gf is still harder than it should be).

While having a huge squat 1RM means you are strong as fuck, IMO there are better, faster ways to get strong as fuck. In powerlifting you work not on getting strong as fuck, but at having a big total, and while the goals and effects are kinda similar, I feel there's a more efficient way to get strong as fuck. Like 3-5RMs, or having a greater variety of lifts, or not having your training revolve around big three. I mean I had a 165kg bench 1RM and a judoka outpushed me in training (basically you try to pull the other guy to you while he is pushing you away and vice versa; the dude outpushed me despite not really training for strength because I couldn't maintain my pushing strength or apply it efficiently in that situation and position).

They're only dangerous if you have bad deadlift form or try to RPE 9000 it, but that's true for every other type of deadlift.

Nevertheless, they're very similar to RDLs but you keep going down all the way to the start, instead of just hinging at the hips.

So a year ago I dislocated my shoulder. Bench was severely fucked after that but patiently 5x5 was paying off good. Until last week when I dislocated it again. Does anyone have experience/tips to share? I'm going to do physical therapy for 6 weeks anyway
