I don't think it's totally a meme, but it's one of those things that works much better if you believe in it.

I was reading this chinese book one time that said that all power was contained in the semen, soul and breath and to stop all three from leaking. Or something. Think about it though: after you fap, you feel drained and have less drive generally. After you breathe out, there's a similar loss of energy, which is why you breathe in a specific rhythm during weight exercises. Long term, there's probably not a ton of difference, I think it might just be a short term boost you get without noticing.
