How was Ed Coan so good ? He has the body of a cereal box, no real thigh/glute thickness, and certainly no long legs ...

People on loads and loads of drugs don't diddy 900, bench 550 and squat 1000 in knee wraps and a singleply suit, unless they're SHW.
>>
Ed Coan is sick as fuck. He got memed because roids became a bad thing in the middle of his career so he (rightly) continued juicing like everyone else, know that he wasnt doing anything wrong. He was just wrong time and place, still great but in the same way a confederate general was great post civil war. Yeah he was a great general but slavery is wrong now so he's bad.
>>
hey /plg/, when I do ab work, or squat/deadlifts, I get pain in my lower erector(maybe at the insertion?), and it's only on the right side. What does this mean? I've only had this pain for maybe a week.
>>
>>39765334

Why do so many people squat without sleeves now? Dutch national champions, random people I follow on insta, even filip.
>>
>>39765469
>like everyone else
False.

I know so many older lifters, who were at their best in the late 70s and throughout the 80s. I know everything from old world champions to people who never really made it past regional medals. They say this "everyone did it" is completely snatched out of someones asshole.

People didnt even fully believe that steroids work in the late 70s, guys said things like "they dont work for me" like guys say about creatine today.

>>39765744
Because they don't do anything besides knee tracking but that's only required if you're a noob
>>
>>39765561
By ab work do you mean situps? Sounds like you might have a very mild herniation and you could be flirting with making it worse. Drop situps/crunches yesterday and learn to love Stuart McGill.
>>

>>
>>39765950
>don't do anything besides knee tracking

Is that what they do? I should probably get some then, huh?
>>
>>39766013
Not situps, but when I do cable crunches and I go from fully extended arched lower back to the concentric portion of the movement it hurts for just a second. Wouldn't herniation hurt in the spine(in the middle), not only on one side of my back? I'm pretty sure it's pain in the muscle or insertion but I can't be sure(never had back pain before)

Nerve pain can radiate and present oddly. Generally you'd know if it was muscular, nerve pain usually feels like more of pinching pain than a muscle pull. But I'm diagnosing you based on a few sentences on 4chan and I don't actually have a medical degree yet so hey.
>>
>>39766119
Well that's all I know currently. What do you think I should do? Stop squats and deads altogether for the moment? And how into rehab?
>>
>>39766127
Rather than me describing all of it, look up Stuart McGill, watch every youtube video you find, even/especially the 1996-quality ones, look up the spinal stabilization protocols he's put out, and probably relearn your squat and deadlift placing a massive emphasis on trunk bracing and keeping a neutral lumbar position.

So, about new original content...

I have a new hypothesis, and apparently this hasn't been studied yet at all.

How quads (vastus lateralis specifically) with higher "insertion" (actually it's just the muscle being bunched up higher on the thigh, genetic ofc) are very strong and make excellent squatters.

Two examples we have here are Frog and Alex, both who had incredibly fast squat progression and are very good at squatting.

This is explained by the higher quads having a considerably longer tendon, thus a considerably longer moment arm for knee extension compared to regular quads.

So basically
higher quads = talentchad, really strong quads
lower quads = is better for bodybuilding but weaker

How do you guys feel about it? Anyone else with actual high quads here?
>>
>>39767085
It was, last few weeks everything has been feeling great except my left knee. And yeah it really will, I've been getting consistent high 90s the whole class, I know my drugs, I know my cardiology. Only things I'm not 100% on are pediatrics and burns but that'll be like three questions.
>>
>>39767108
I think there's a proven link between higher insertions and better output.
>>

Frog Leg.png
1MB, 750x1334px
>>39767108

Another interesting detail, Frog has even higher quads than Alex, and reached 4pl8 squat at 3.5 months. Alex reached 4pl8 squat at 5 months.

Not sure how directly this was affect by the vastus lateralis, but it's interesting to see this correlation.

>>
>>39767151

Ye your quads are the normal height, or lower.

But don't let this discourage you, if you look at top tier athletes you'll see many have regular quads.

I know very well, I'm very good at math. And logarithmic/exponential functions were my favourite part.

But in my experience as ESL is that it's also used to define something that just grows very fast and out of proportion.

If that's wrong and shouldn't be used this way, the fault is of your news reporters and journals. I just repeat what I hear/see.

You're wrong unless I've misunderstood something.

A lower insertion point (not talking about looks here), where the quadriceps insert lower on the tibia, is a stronger quadricep. This is because the moment arm becomes longer, as the insertion is set further away from the origin. All quadricep heads insert at about the same point on the tibia. So if we're talking about physical insertion point, then it's the opposite.

However, if we're talking looks, were the vastus lateralis seems to reside higher up on the leg, then it shouldn't matter. How your quadriceps looks, it primarily comes down to tendon vs muscle belly length, and I would be very surprised to see it affect the moment arm. If anything, a lower vastus lateralis would be stronger, since it could further increase the distance between the insertion and point where the force is coming from.

>>39768154
That's not just a bad angle, we can barely see you..

You seem to know how to set up tight at least, but you just can't keep it. Your hips rise, but I think they do it as a response to your back rounding.

If you fix the back rounding, you'll probably fix the other things as well.
I would guess you round due to posterior chain weakness.
I think the most bang for your buck would probably be to mash hamstring accessories. You don't have to keep the exercises varied, just stick to one and do a lot of volume. Glute strength could help too, but hamstrings contribute more at the bottom, which I think they are more worth to train for you.

Good job on keeping the bar in a good spot when you start, it doesn't move horizontally at all.

If your hips keep rising in 1-2 months time, consider setting up with a little higher hips.

Ever wonder if you can actually "lose it"? like, lose your ability to be strong? mentally of course. I'm curious if that the route I'm currently going.

Looking back on how I used to train, I notice a few groups of people that are similar, if not the same as me - beginners, typical "meatheads", people who just tuck their head and bull forward. They all have similar personalities and tendencies that I used to have when I was training successfully. My personality has genuinely changed since then, so I'm wondering if I've permanently changed myself to the point that the method of training for me that works isn't attainable. Either way, training only makes me feel worse and hate everything more currently.

Trying to look at it objectively and figure out how to get back to just being a meathead and sort of training like a brute, because that was the most fun and thats the sort of mental environment I used to thrive in.

Don't really care about getting back into PL much (unless it works out on its own), but I'd really like to enjoy lifting weights again.

I'm thinking that I need to
1) start using therapy sessions to figure out how to stop my anxiety
2) get a formal sleep study and try to fix my sleep patterns so that I can actually recover
3) possibly take an extended time off from lifting, sort of a mandated time off to perhaps heal up, and maybe make me miss lifting. (this will probably be impossible for me and I'll probably need some one to administer it). This would be things like cardio, body weight workouts, maybe try a light sport like cycling, tennis, swimming etc, perhaps some yoga.
4) I NEED to start managing my fucking work / life balance. unfortunately this could be as far as telling my superiors that I can't handle it.

I'm thinking that If I don't do something in the next few months my depression will just keep growing and ruin everything to the point of no return.

Again, trying to be objective - thoughts?

Just try harder.

What do you do in the day that's interfering with sleep? What's the problem?

Try getting more bright light in the morning, less light at night, take 250-500mcg of melatonin 30 minutes before bed, you can take another dose about the same on top of extended release to help stay asleep too. Google sleep hygiene.

That's just my advice for you.

Oh, and try eating a good dose of carbs around bedtime.

Mostly that life is just so busy.

But I agree. I need to nut up and fix these things. I was mostly asking for feedback to see if the conclusions I've come to make sense to every one, or if i'm just going down a rabbit hole of incorrect thinking

>>39768545
>>39768525
I absolutely agree that sleep is probably the most prominent problem.

I'm already very aware of basics of sleep hygene. I"ll admit i'm not great about adhering to the rules of thumb though. However I do know what needs to be done.

I think the largest contributing factor is actually my sleep apnea, which gets worth with anxiety. So,
->get anxiety
->get less sleep because sleep apnea gets worse
->recover for work and working out less
->perform work and training even worse
->causes more anxiety

its a nasty positive feedback loop that I can't control well (yet)

I think getting a sleep study is probably really important.

>>39768609
I'm not saying that it isn't a factor, but it isn't the primary factor. I was 120kg for the longest time at first and things were already sprialing out of control. Not saying being 125 currently isn't exacerbating it, but some other mechanism is at play as well that needs to be identified and mitigated I think.

I do whole heartedly agree though, losing some weight needs to be added in for compounding effect

>>39768626
Already discussed sleep hygiene; in certain circumstances yes I do misbehave that way - but I am aware of those things
>caffeine metabolic half life of ~6 hrs

I made clear throughout the text that while it's normal to call it "quads insertion", it wasn't actually the insertion, but the height of the VL.

As for moment arm:

>Biomechanics of Skeletal Muscles, Zatsiortsky & Prilutsky

>Section 5.3.1.4: Moment Arm of Muscles with Curved Paths: Quadriceps

Muscle line segments that do not cross the joint do not immediately
generate a moment of force about the joint. Hence, the distances from the
joint rotation axis to these segments are irrelevant for the joint torque production.
If the muscle–tendon path at the joint is perpendicular to the axis of rotation, the moment arm is equal to the shortest distance d between the
muscle–tendon path and the axis of rotation. If the angle between the plane
of muscle path at the joint and the rotation axis is ϕ ≠ π / 2, then the shortest
distance d should be multiplied by sinϕ (see equation 5.8).

>TL;DR:
It counts from where the tendon meets the muscle down to the point of insertion, ignoring the length before that.

Yeah, and I mentioned three of the top weightlifters of this generation, all have low quads. It's the common one.

The point here is not to make people who have regular quads feel bad, just hypothesising that the high quads explain the ridiculously fast progression of some of the guys here. And also I'm interesting to know if we have someone with high quads that is bad at squatting.

I started SL5x5 (with Power Cleans instead of Barbell Rows, so kind of like SS5x5)

My latest lifts are (from different starting points):
117.5kg Squat
70kg BP (Failed once before)
55kg OHP (Failed last time)
145kg Death
72.5kg PC

3/2/1 Chin ups
8/8/8 Dips (I can do much more of these desu)

Close grip and Paused BP aligned with OHP

So my Squat form started breaking down by caving in and my spine started hurting after OHP. When this happens, do I count it as a fail or is this meant to be normal when you play close to your max? I don't want to go to snap city.
>>
>>39769725
>So my Squat form started breaking down by caving in and my spine started hurting after OHP.

Your knees were caving in? Did you feel the OHP more in the lower or upper back? And has this started just with the weights you listed or has it already happened in last few exercise sessions before that?

Are rehbands elbow sleeves usapl approved?
>>
>>39769770
Yes, my knees feel like they want to cave in (and they do 10cm or so) and my ass shoots up slightly faster than the bar.

For OHP, it's the lower back, even though I try hard to squeeze my glutes. I feel like my torso goes too far back and I decline bench the weight up.

I'd say it started around 5kg ago for the squat and 2.5kg ago for the OHP (So the second last workout B session)

Damn :s

Back in my gym the two senior coaches were like same level, and they had very different methodologies to teaching stuff and fixing stuff.
Sometimes one would take a jab at the work of the other when the opportunity showed up, but in general they respected each other's work.

What's funny is, I was a level below them, and I did learn a lot from them, but I also learned a lot from working on /fit/ and reading a lot of books not available in portuguese...
So at some point I started to bring in a lot of new stuff, had developed my own method of working with new people and the athletes, and my autismo about biomechanics impressed the senior coaches a lot.
I actually talked to them casually and would explain complicated concepts, like lats in the deadlift, hamstrings during squat, details on the bench, etc...
I wasn't like "teaching" them but they were learning a lot from my autismo.

Thankfully they didn't hate me for it and started to really respect me and treat me as if I was as experienced as them (I was not, just autistic)

But I guess I was lucky that the gym already had two coaches who learned to respect each other, so I didn't have issues cause they were open minded.
If I went to a gym where there's a single chief coach and started spreading my autismo or correcting small things or doing things my own way... 100% I'd be kicked out as well.

>>39770477

Yes, your legs (quads hamstrings glutes) are what lift the bar.
I mentioned back strength cause you didn't fold during the grinding (very common), and it was always scraping your body instead of drifting away (strong spinal erectors and lats)

So the back doesn't lift the bar in most situations*, but it's what holds your body while your body lifts the bar. :P

* except on certain types on rounded back lockouts that will depend on the back to be fully erect.

I'm SO proud of you Norsie! Blacksmithlad here. I used to have much more problems than I have at the moment. That was a year ago when we spoke last here at 4chan. I got a job a year ago in this new city. In this new city was also a girl that dumped me, and then I moved to this small town where she could be anywhere. Before I moved I had also read a lot in "No more mr nice guy" and realized I had a different mindset towards normal everyday life situations than other people, that because I had a different basic primal mindset, absolutely everything I did became WRONG because it was based on fear and anxiety.

So knowing I was broken, moving to a new place, getting a new job with stressors, looking out for the girl, also being friendless and girlfriendless, it took a toll on me. One day I was walking on town and I realized I stopped breathing and I had to consciously begin breathing again. Also I started telling myself in my mind "It will be alright." Over and over again and I didn't know where it came from. That weird self-help I did made me realize I needed help. So I went to the work health care and told them I wanted a psychologist. I got one, a sucky one but at least I got to talk to someone. Then I also told my dad how I felt about his abusive upbringing of me. And then it all fell off my shoulders.

Also from reading the book and realizing my mindset is off, I began studying my colleagues. When they spoke of their life, I wondered "how are they thinking, what's their mindset and approach". And so I got new role models. And nowadays when situations arise, I can notice my bad thought habits arise, brush them off, consider how my colleagues would do in this same situation, and then to it that way. Even if it's a small thing like reacting to a bully or dealing with everyday small problems.

Like you, I realized I had a problem and I did something about it. I believe in you Norsie!

You're welcome. Also, when I moved here and I got all those stressors taking a toll on me, my stress levels rose so high that my stomach stopped working. I had on and off diarrhea (mostly all the time) for 9 fucking months. 9 months! So I gave up coffee, alcohol, gluten and dairy for 9 months and then finally my stomach started working again and now I take good quality shits.
