Is it normal to lose more than 1 lb a week when starting out a cut? Water I'm guessing?

You're probably doing more as you're not accurately counting calories burned doing random shit. Things like the weight of clothes, amount and temperature of the water you drink, walking short distances, and general movement all burn calories. While its not a lot, it does add up over time.

I averaged 2-3 lbs per week. 5'11", cutting at a 500 Cal deficit from 174 to 159.

Yeah it can vary individual to individual. you may lose 1 to 3 pounds a week but that can be a mixture between water, fat, glycogen. Hopefully you weigh on a empty stomach every morning to get accurate reads.If i start cutting and dont eat high sodium i can lose anywhere between 2 to 5 pounds of water in like a day or two. As long as its consistent you are probably good. Just remember its not a race but a marathon.
