Float around, ask how people are doing, try to let go of thinking you look like a fool because that's just a self fulfilling prophecy. Make small talk to a bunch of groups of people so they are eventually familiar and comfortable with your presence and then just hang out and have fun. Be prepared to fail and fail often. It's hardest when you're first starting out but every day it'll get a little bit easier.

Also your coworker could be lying but so what? Don't judge him for his actions but by the results of those actions in those scenarios.
