Sheiko likes working with partials a lot because it lets him look at technique details and improve specific aspects of the lift.
It also allows the lifter to focus on getting stronger in a specific weakpoint.

I also think, but this is my own conjecture, that the lifter is able to pull more volume if the deadlift is separated in two like that, instead of doing two full deadlift sessions. Though it does have the downside of the volume being divided in two halves.

TL;DR: It's just how Sheiko does things. You can customise it if you don't like it.

Sumo is typically slow off the floor and fast to lockout. That's why block pulls are so easy in sumo vs conventional.

Only time my dl is fast off the floor and failed at lockout is when I let my back flex and I rob Peter to pay Paul, so then my back is too flexed to lock out.

Otherwise, in a deadlift with a straight back, it's hard off the floor

Also how much are you supposed to feel your back on the DL ? I abandoned so many Conventional lifts because I started to feel my back (even if it was the upper back).

That is honestly the main reason I switched to Sumo because I dont feel my upperback on the Sumodeadlift pretty much at all.

It's a successful pull that would be 3 white lights if not for the straps.

His back rounds a little bit, but that's 317kg (PR back then). During regular training he always uses lighter weights and his back is always straight. And he only tests new PRs every 3 or so months.

So it's about context.

Here's his 310kg pull to win 1st place @ nationals.

recently I just stopped giving a fuck about slight rounding, I guess that is the better way. I never have pain or anything in my lowerback or my back in general so I guess it's fine. I only abandon lifts if I feel pressure building up in my lowerback now otherwise I just dont give a fuck about slight back rounding.

The only pair that have ever worked for me are a really light pair of weightlifting straps from John Broz's gym.

Instead of wrapping around, you just loop the straps around the bar, pull them tight, and stick your hands in.

My grip gets weaker with straps from slipping, half the time.

That's a really big part of it. Both Candito and 2sher are really good deadlifters, so any significant differences are probably down to build.

Brace your whole trunk, pull the bar up/in to your legs with your lats before you break the floor, get some tension in your hams, then fight to keep everything tight and in the same position throughout the lift. Candito's advice IS correct, however it's in the context of being able to deadlift with correct form, i.e. keeping your back straight in the pull.
Yours is rounding, which you are mistaking for hips rising. Work on keeping tight and not letting your lower back round.

I was just trying to explain that it's about context.

A novice or early-intermediate lifter, who maxes out the DL every day or every week, should be more careful and mindful of back rounding. To the point where stopping due to form breakdown is common.

A more experienced or competitive lifter, on the other hand, only maxes out ever 2-3+ months. So they spend a lot of time training with weights that don't really put their back in risk.
But when they actually attempt a new max or it's a competition, they really give it all they can and don't let it go until it's over. They're (usually) still flexing their back and trying to keep it straight, but if it flexes, they will keep going.

Don't worry too much about starting position. Starting a little bit lower and having the hips rise a bit is common and not considered bad form. It's just a "dynamic start".

Relax, it's not a big deal. The RPE between 2 and 3 reps is kinda similar anyways. The real point is the amount of sets, that's what makes the big difference.

So you don't really need to worry... but if you really can't shake it off, just do one or two extra sets and it'll be overall more work than you're supposed to do.

You can't drop the bar like that in comps. You'd get red lighted even if you lifted perfectly.

In training it doesn't matter, but I'd suggest starting to actually lower the bar (doesn't need to be slow) just so the motor pattern gets ingrained and you don't accidentally drop it during a competition (these things happen all the time because of the emotions and adrenaline).

You're supposed to pause when doing DL to the knees :P Hold it for like 2-3s at the end of each rep.

Bench is looking A LOT better. And you do huge pauses, which means you're gonna have a big edge in competition when the pauses don't take that long.

Deadlift is looking strong.
Your knee locking is properly timed and there's no hitching.

During the second phase (from knees to lockout), while you're doing it correctly and strongly, you can have an additional improvement. That is, you can probably get even stronger just by involving the glutes more with a slight addition to technique, making lockouts easier and faster.
You do this by thinking about thrusting your hips forward, instead of just lifting the bar. Just this simple thought of "I'm gonna thrust my hips" will make sure you engage all the power of your hip musculature, and specially the glutes (one of the strongest muscles but which people don't take full advantage of it).

The third thing are the lockouts. Now, you're just training, and tired, so it's normal to just skip locking out properly and just lowering the bar as soon as you feel the rep is good. But for competition (and sorry for being so anal about it), you have to make sure you are fully locking out (knees, hips, shoulders) and wait a bit until you receive the signal to lower the barbell. People lose lifts ALL the time because of this. Being slightly unlocked, or not bringing the shoulders "back" into neutral, or jumping the sign to lower the bar. If you watch even the World's Championship, the amount of deadlifts that are lost to these mistakes is huge.
Now, I'm not gonna say you have to pause at the lockout for every rep (I'm not as anal as Sheiko), for warmups and sets of higher reps, it's fine to do it faster. But for heavier attempts, say 85%+, you should really try to do a competition-perfect lift all the time and for every rep.

It's normal to feel weirded out, but it should feel normal once you start getting used to it. And once you do, it becomes natural and holding the bar the other way feels off.

But in the end, it's a preference thing. There are amazing lifters who use jap grip, there are amazing lifters who use regular grip. So try it for a while and see which you actually prefer.

I'm doing ok. I am having serious second thoughts about my CS major as a graduating senior. Really wish I had studied classics or history tbqh. Those are things I like and have found inspiring. CS on the other hand is interesting but uninspiring (for me).

If you absolutely hate CS and can't imagine yourself working a career in it for the rest of your life, switch before you end up regretting it and wanting to kill yourself every day as you wageuck through life doing something you hate.

jr WR @74 is an excellent goal. The current holder is Hancock, who is a big "celebrity" who lifted a lot but got a back injury (probably from deadlifting like ayy lmao for a long time) and is now out for the foreseeable future.
Also, Sean is really into cock. I mean Hancock.

Vid related is my fav 74 lifter, though he's bench-only. But 212kg bench @70 is insane.

that happens to a lot of people. you'll be glad when you're making as much money as twink. classics or history make great minors but bad majors from just about everything I've heard. a boss that I had at a different job told me that one reason that STEM degrees are so nice is because you can get a job in a lot of different fields, such as management or something like that, because a CS (in your case) degree is a really good "I'm not an idiot" certificate. even if you don't like CS as much as you'd hoped, maybe you can find something else that you would be good at.

I'm working at a co-op right now, so I worked summer and this semester, then next semester I go back to school. so it''s like I got 4 credits but just worked instead of classes. looks good on a resume and I get to make more money to help pay for school. it's really nice. would recommend.

Well im 1 class away from major so i wont "switch," I just dont necessarily plan to do it for my life. I think I could do CS related things and be ok at them but I just dont enjoy it as much as I thought i did.

Fuckkkk that would be awesome. I'd love to go. I just have no idea where Im going to end up post-grad. I actually really like the midwest; most of the people at my school are east coast and think midwest a shit but theyve never been there and dont understand the appeal.

And yeah, I think what you are saying about this is true. Honestly I would be happy to work in something like IT at a university, or teaching (not CS), or something analytical that isnt programming. Or maybe Ill study classics .... :^)

Next semester Im doing 1 cs to finish my major and 3 classics for funsies. Hopefully Ill be able to read new testament in greek after (not a jesus freak, just think itd be cool)
