Get him to do this novice linear progression program:

AxBxA
BxAxB

A:
Squat 3x5
Press 3x5
Chinups 3xF or 3x5 Weighted
Deadlift 1x5
-Extras-
Close-grip Bench Press 3x6-8 SS DB Incline Hammer Curls 3x8-12
Lateral Raises 5x12-12 SS Standing Calf Raises 4x15-20

B:
Squat 3x5
Bench Press 3x5
Barbell Rows 3x5
-Extras-
Close-grip Bench Press 3x6-8 SS DB Incline Hammer Curls 3x8-12
Lateral Raises 5x12-12 SS Standing Calf Raises 4x15-20

Work up to a heavy 5 on the main lifts with good form- not a 5RM, just a challenging set with correct form. Then when you do the exercises again, add 5lb for squats or deadlifts, 2.5lb for the Press, Bench Press and Barbell Rows.

For the Chinups just wait until he can do 3x9, then go 3x5 weighted.

If he misses any of his reps or messes up in some way, deload the lift by 10%.

For the Extras, up the reps, then up the weight and drop the reps back down. They are just there to keep bodily proportion and don't need to be treated like the main 5rep exercises. SS means superset.

This will last the duration of the Novice Phase, which will be between 4-6 months, and works fullbody 3x weekly.
