If I can do chest presses with a pair of 23.5kg dumbells, for 3 sets of 8 reps each, is this respectable strength? Is it even what a normal manual labourer could do?

You see very few people pushing 140kg in non-meathead gyms.
100kg should be your first target OP. I'd give yourself 5-10 months to achieve it.
