I just want to talk to someone about this a little bit. I witnessed something today that really solidified my disgust for fat people and maybe people in general.

I have to do dialysis treatments three days a week at a clinic because of kidney failure. It was kidney disease caused by an infection when I was younger, pretty much beyond my control, so I'm the youngest one at the clinic by a lot until recently. Most of the other people are elderly with various other health problems, mostly diabetic or obesity related. After my diagnosis I made some big positive changes to my life, so I'm bordering on fit, and stay vigilant about my health because I see dialysis and hopefully kidney transplant as a new chance at life. Other patients at the clinic really depress me, because most of them are there because they ignored their diabetes or bloodpressure until it destroyed their kidneys, some even have amputations or blindness because of it.

Anyway, recently a new patient came in. Younger lady, maybe in her 30s, enourmously obese, pushing 400 lbs. She can barely fit in the oversize chairs we do the treatment in. Clearly she isn't taking care of herself, especially to be there so young. Since she started coming in, she's had a habit of cutting her treatment short, which is bad news if you have total kidney failure. You start accumulating a lot of fluid, and the toxins in your blood build up very fast. It takes quite a few treatments to catch up if you miss just one. Once fluid builds up, your blood pressure goes off the charts. The nurse watching her called out to the head nurse that her BP was 198/105 with a 130 pulse. That is just insane. She's basically a walking stroke.

So she's been missing or cutting short a bunch of treatments, and clearly suffering from it. Her ankles are nearly as big as my waist with edema, and she can barely walk. The clinic does not have a wheelchair that she can fit in to roll her to the dialysis machine. Her face connects directly to her shoulders via a huge neck roll. She wheezes and huffs just walking from the door to her chair. But she refuses to do her treatment properly, so in the past month, he has steadily gotten worse and worse.

Three days ago, she collapsed in the lobby of the clinic. Just fell flat out. I figured this was it. An ambulance was called, and paramedics came, but by the time they arrived, she had come to, and refused to be taken to the hospital. They sat her in her chair, and an hour later she demanded to go home, even though her treatment was supposed to last 4 hours. Apparently she's had a stroke before because of her refusal to follow the doctors orders.

She's basically killing herself. Which is really sad to watch. She apparently has kids and a husband, but that doesn't seem to sway her toward taking care of herself. It's a viscious cycle, because she wants to leave treatment early because she feel terrible, but the only reason she feels this bad is because she continually misses treatment. The nurses can't force her to follow the doctors ordes, so she's going to circle the drain, maybe just for days.

It just makes me wonder, is she wanting to die, but too cowardly to kill herself? Is she letting her health deteriorate because she is unable to change her lifestyle, or is this her way of ending it without pulling the trigger herself?

It is abhorrent to watch someone squqnder their existence like this. It is unthinkable for me, someone who wants to move on with life after transplant and live a healthy life to witness someone rush themselves into an early grave with their own choices. I can't wrap my head around it.

There isn't really a point to this story, but I needed to talk to someone about it. I can only see it as extreme selfishness. Especially so because of the kids and husband. Those are people who rely on her, but she's made herself into a disgusting burden on her family, the clinic, and the government (who pays for 99% of dialysis patients through medicare, me included), and instead of trying to better herself or reduce her burden,she just throws her life away apathetically.

I want to move on after this, to contribute somehow with my life because it has been given back to me. Maybe make a dent in the unpayable debt of kindness and care that my family and country have extended to me without condition. I know I would be dead if I didn't have these treatments, and seeing her do this horrible thing to herself just lets me peer into what my life could have been. It reminds me how easy it is to throw life away when you don't care.

She has to know it's coming to an end. She has to know that all it would take is a little effort to save her own life. How can you face this reality and ignore it?
