Sorry, that's not correct.
There are other things you can take an hour or so before a workout that will affect the quality. These are the ones that I believe work the best:
Beta Alanine
N-Acetyl-Tyrosine
Nitrates (beet juice concentrate, for instance)
Creatine
B-vitamins
Most pre-workouts have, in my opinion, too much caffeine in them, typically 200-300mg. You only need about 100mg, an hour before your workout.
During your workout, you'd be advised to have an easily assimilable carbohydrate source (like maltodextrin, 100kcal/hour is all you really need) with a SMALL amount of caffeine (35-50mg for the whole workout) and chelated electrolytes, all in 16-24 ounces of water per hour. Optionally, add some BCAAs and a small amount of Tyrosine to 'keep the party going', so-to-speak, through your workout.

I do coffee if it's cold. Preworkout if it's warm.
Coffee is the only thing I'll take. Get home from work, drink a coffee and relax for a bit, then start my workout.
