How long do you need to recover? Usually, in order to conserve muscle mass you would have to eat at a maintenance. That way when you hit the gym after your injury, you won't lose as much gains.

like 6 months after my surgery, which will hopefully be soon

measure your legs. for the next 6 months all you trains is legs and abs. Dont squat, you will probably end up hurting your back. after 6 months measure your legs again. Also not a chance you will be keeping all your muscle. 6 months is a long time mayne. how did you hurt your shoulder?
Patellar tendonitis. Anyone have experience with it? Been over a year now

Take some time off it's really bad (for me it was "hurts when I walk on non-flat ground"-tier). Stretch and warm up really thoroughly before a training session. When you can train with very little/no pain you can start with really low intensity and moderate volume and slowly increase. If you feel more than a little it the next day you did too much. Vary what exercises you get your volume from. Leg press was decent for me, and Bulgarian split squats helped a lot. With this I've gone from pain with 1pl8 to pain-free 2pl8 (still a way to go). It's gonna take a long time though.
