Any movement that your body does naturally is done in three dimensions, in the x,y,and z axis (Up/down, backwards/forwards, left/right).
The smith machine, and other machines in general, force your body to move in a strict motion in one or two planes, when the body naturally moves fluidly through three. Because of this, stabilizer muscles which are activated through free-weight movements are not activated through machines. This can lead to imbalances, and potential injuries when trying to perfom the movement freely or with heavy weight.
I've got to question too; you've been tripping for quite awhile, that I've noticed. Basic questions like these are all answered in the sticky, but you're still asking things that complete beginners pick up on quickly. Why bother tripping? Is it to troll? For attention?
I recommend, if you actually give a shit about fitness, to take studying the subject seriously and put some effort in.
