I just did a skype call with my brother who I have been estranged from for about five years (long story). We used to be incredibly close as kids. He was very very athletic, heavy build (we're Samoan) but fit.

When I saw him on screen I didn't recognize him. He's got to be over 400 lbs now. ;_;

I asked if he was OK, ad still working out. He said he put on some weight because it runs in the family and he was getting older.

Meanwhile, I'm at a normal weight and have the lowest BMI I've had in my adult life.

I am also a gril and lost over a hundred pounds. Loose skin was a problem at first, but when I added strength training to my regimen, it tightened up.

It takes some time but things do adjust. You might not need the surgery.

Just finished Caitlin Doughty's memoir about being a crematory operator, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.


She has a whole chapter about how the corpses of obese people smell a hundred times worse than the corpses of fit people, and decay more rapidly, and lays out some of the science explaining the phenomenon.

She also describes one case where an obese woman was cremated, and due to unusual conditions in the cremation chamber, the fat liquified and poured out in waves, and it took hours to mop up. The workers were drenched in human fat from head to toe.

And this was in a shop that was careful, and timed the cremation of obese clients very carefully so they didn't combust/smoke up the neighborhood/set the building on fire like sometimes happens when cremating obese people.

I have seen some that did, except for the loose skin which they were able to hid in underwear or whatever. She has to hit below a certain bf℅ to get rid of the stored fat. And workout of course.

I'm part of a volunteer organization, which is mostly staffed by fat middle aged to elderly women.

I'm torn, /fit/. I was an obese kid, grew up in a hellishly abusive household without support, etc. When I was out on my own I took great pains to learn about nutrition and exercise and have a healthier lifestyle. By age 24 I was no longer obese. I've maintained a healthy weight and put on more muscle in the ten years since then.

I can't look at all those nice old ladies and feel fat people hate. Some of them were my teachers, my mentors, and showed me compassion and gave me direction at the darkest times in my life.

One of these women - we'll call her Shirley - is a nurse. She had a sad life, and lost her husband and kids in a car accident. I've never seen her act rude, or entitled, or bitchy like in the hamplanet stories. But I have seen her polish off three plates piled high with food at a potluck, and then go back for cake.

I know fatlogic and binge eating are wrong and self-destructive, like shooting heroin is wrong. But, damn, /fit/. Everybody has something they struggle with. Everybody tries to self medicate in some way.

I come to these threads to motivate myself, and make sure my old habits stay dead. On the other hand, when I look at fat people IRL, I don't feel superior, just sad, sometimes.

Shirley may top out above 300 lbs, but she has done a lot of good in her life. If cake makes it bearable...who am I to judge her?

Just make sure you lose weight gradually, losing too fast can cause more loose skin I think. Also make sure you lift weights and get /fit/ instead of thin. Replacing some of your fat with muscle will help keep the skin tighter.
Overall when you actually get healthy you might have some loose skin but the fupa won't be much of a problem.

Try looking in of a resident plastic surgeon. They do the work for free (getting the xp) with a staff surgeon overseeing them in case things go wrong. You have to pay for the anesthesiologist and hospital room. Still not cheap but cheaper than going to an established surgeon. You can also get some great rookie talent that way. I'm 5'3" and was at 150lbs and started getting that awful sagging skin as I lost weight. I'm now at 118 lbs with 17% bf and I find that keeping myself well hydrated and my skin moisturized really helps as I continue to get fitter.

"Genetics". No but actually. It's a very complicated topic but that's mainly what it comes down to.
This kind of fat deposition (central adiposity it's usually referred to as) is, according to the reasonably leading theory, the main cause of all the nasty crap like CVD and diabeetus that comes from being fat. To sum up some complicated biology, the fat there grows so quickly that it can't grow blood vessels around there fast enough to supply it with oxygen. The fat kinda starts dying and releases all this nasty shit (cytokines and too many adipokines) into the bloodstream which kind of makes its way to the nearest organs like the liver and fucks things up. That's caused mainly by a constant state of inflammation, which is why people say inflammation is bad.
Another theory is that it's specifically the fat that's in the liver that causes bad things, but really it's probably a combination of the two.

Interestingly, since fat does have some good function as an endocrine organ excreting good hormones that regulate some appetite and digestion and things, studies in mice have shown that having fat injected into their extremities (like lower legs and arms) seems to actually help decrease risk of diabeetus and shit. This seems to be the case in humans too but more evidence is needed.

Basically, having a big belly is bad. Being fat is bad in general because usually fat people will start storing fat around their midsection and it gets harder and harder to lose weight the fatter you get.

The cutoff is very low. Anything over about 20% bf for men and 30% bf for women seems to be bad for most people, but there are some outliers which does come back to 'genetics'. The reason some people can be 'fat but metabolically healthy' is mainly due to their fat deposition and the way their body handles inflammation and whether they have genes that are prone to expressing pro inflammatory hormones.

Basically, don't be fat, don't be super skinny either. There's a reason people say bodybuilder ripped is unhealthy, it messes with a lot of your hormones and is v bad.

In the marching band at my univ, there is this fat ass girl. After every set, she is always panting and out of breath. While it is difficult and after our whole show it is hard not to be out of breath, she practically dies after we run a small chunk of our show. I have never seen her run to reset, and she has to sit down almost every 20 minutes. And the funniest thing is, she is always talking about how marching band is a sport.
