I know good guys that can do a lot of damage in tae kwondo, karate , wing tsun, bjj, muay thai

is all the same if you train to compete is one thing. if you train to fuck people up is another thing, for example wing tsun has the best kicks imo. been practicing for 4 years for self defense and works fine.
however there are some kids at my school that are just pathethic.

BUT

if you are worried about defending yourself and NOT killing somebody, you need to know how to fight.

For that the TWO MAIN MARTIAL ARTS, are BJJ and Muy Thai

If you do those two you are solid well rounded fighter.

The only thing you would be missing is the transition game from standing to ground, for that you should train greco roman wrestling for takedowns OR judo for throws, both of which should be taught at your local MMA gym.

Groundfighting and grappling in general is a prime example of this, arguably even more so than stand up striking seeing as how taking a stray punch from leaving yourself open is nothing compared to getting caught in a lock/choke ect.

Takedown defense is an absolute must if you don't want your brains dashed across the pavement by someone who knows what they're doing, and the clinch limits your opponents striking options while expanding your own

But self defense point of view it may not be the best idea, if someone pulls a knife and happens to catch you in a bad position or their friends decide to jump in you can't run.
