Stand against a wall and measure your shoulder width from deltoid to deltoid with a pencil and ruler.

I'll start
20 inches

>wall width is usually slightly higher than caliper width (<1 inch)

Barely 20 if the online ruler is correct. Maybe my delts will grow out eventually.

OP here
This is the place, today.

There's a lot of discrepancy on the matter of shoulder width. Some studies show the average as low as 16.3 in a Yale physical education department study of first year students in the early 1900s, and lots of modern NASA and military studies show the average American male to be 19.3 inches, there's even a recent study of firemen where the average was shown at 22.5 inches.

T Nation and several questionable sources from bodybuilding websites claim the average is 18, which I think is lower, but that's why we're here, to find out
>>
>>39183787
No, type in 'online ruler' on google. It calibrates the displayed ruler according to your monitor res. I used my earphone wire to measure chest, then held it against the monitor to measure the length of the wire.

How is the fitness board average higher than the maximum single reported value in this 1990 NASA survey ?

Highest reported there is 54 cm or 21.5 inches and average is 47 cm/18.4 inches;
Average here is near 22", max is 26"
>>
>>39190220
Your width is 90% determined by your bone structure- clavicles, sternum, acromion joint.

There isn't much you can do.
>>
>>39190354

that includes height, chest width, lifts, etc.

>>
I measured at 17.5 but I'm pretty sure I did it wrong, I believe it's probably 2 inches below that. 5'8
>>
>>39190379
People don't E-stat that much.
Plus these measurements are corroborated by height and weight.

One guy posted his chest size of 43 inches which sounds in line with his 22" wide shoulders.

I am OP, my shoulders are 20" at 5'7" 145 lbs and a slightly under 40" chest.

I don't even fill out a medium shirt most of the time, usually the shoulder seam sits slightly on the slope of my shoulder rather than on top of the bone.

I'm not a big guy, but according to NASA and military data, I would be above average.

I don't understand.
>>
>>39190371

Yep, and the only way delts will grow large enough to significantly increase your width is with Roids...

Natties will not add 2" of thickness to each delt
>>
>>39190354

Keep in mind that the 26" wide guy also said he was 6'3". And he might have been including his deltoid development on top of that.
>>
>>39190466
We are all including our delts
That was the clear instruction, it is how NASA and military and scientists do this measurement as well

People should do their stomach too so we can see the v-taper ratio.

5'6" 1/2

20" shoulders exactly

11" stomach

This is 0.45 stomach to shoulder ratio, correct?
>>
You guys must be measuring wrong. Mine are 19" and they don't look narrow at all in real life. I see tons of guys with narrower shoulders than mine whenever I'm in public. How can everyone here be >20?

>>39190616

Good point that waist width is every bit as important to V taper as shoulder width.

You can have long collar bones and massive delts and still not have a great taper if you have a wide waist. Lot of pro-strongmen are like that.

I've seen Thor Bjornsson in person, and his shoulders are wide as a fucking barn, BUT he also has a wide waist and hips too. In pictures he doesn't have that good of a V-taper.
>>
>>39190642
>>39190678
Are you guys measuring joint to joint or delt to delt?

Joint to joint I'd probably be about 19
>>
>>39190642
Most people on this board lift weights, and many of us have larger deltoid muscles because of that, which are included in the measurement.

It's no wonder we would be higher than average because of that.

I also think it's higher than average because people with wider shoulders have higher testosterone, and people with higher testosterone are more likely to start lifting weights in the first place.

That and some people are lying. I swear I measured correctly though and I'm telling the truth, I have bigger shoulders than you (20") as a 5'6" manlet, you mad?

If someone seems unusually wide then chances are they are using D2.

Biacromial (D7) width relates very closely with height.

Total width (D2) can vary a lot more depending on build.
>>
>>39191091
Most people are using D2, it's what OP described

As a natural, assuming you start out skinny and got room on your boney shoulders - about 1" each side. That's all though, and that's a lot if muscle. Think a 1" thick uncocked steak for size.

Now if you are roiding 2-3" depending on dose and compounds etc... adding in synthol and you could get another 2" of intramuscular scar tissue. - think Mr.Dick Piano

He's about 10" wider in total than his starting point
>>
>>39190430
The averages include men who don't lift, on /fit/ there is almost a greater amoint of people who lift here compared to real life. So the average here would be greater than say a college campus.

I'm 68in tall, with 22in shoulders and 43in chest, I'm bigger than 90% of guys I see on campus. Most are skinny or lanky with horrible posture. Just got out of chem lecture and I was the only person who sat up straight and didn't slouch.
>>
6'4", 21"
>why live
>>
>>39184801
This is fucking dumb
>>
>>39194508
Not 10 inches, his width is just 5 inches more than his biacromial width, so 80% of his width in bone.
>>
>>39194578
A lot of guys lift. Lifting doesn't add 3-4 inches to your width, only 1-2. A lot of guys finish puberty from 18-23 and get longer clavicles during this time, contributing to gained width, but that isn't a result of lifting weights.
>>
>>39194911

There is NO way that Piana's delts are inly 2.5" thick.... they are 5" thick, but he has 2 shoulders.

5 x 2 = 10

He's 6ft, so probably 18" biacromial width.

18 + 10 = 28" wide, which seems about correct ~1"
>>
Most of his width is coming from the meat on his shoulders. Lots of its probably scar tissue too, but the point being, as wide as he looks his biacromial width is still normal.

Just to show the importance of Biacromial width in bodybuilding, this is a shopped picture of Dick Piano, the only difference is his delts are approx 1" less on each side.

This is to demonstrate what he would look like, with the exact same amount of overall body muscularity, except, with his collar bones being 1" shorter on each side.
