Why not both?

On a side note does anyone remember when captchas didn't take 2 minutes to fill out?
>>

when i realized i could barbell much higher weight than i could dumbbell

dem stabilizers mayne
>>
>>39134064
>if it's more weight it's better!

Why the fuck does that matter? By that logic you should only decline bench press since you'll move the most weight
>>
>>39134034
I generally do barbell because I'm doing this for aesthetics, not for functional strength. But maybe I'm talking out of my ass and DB Bench is just better overall. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>
>>39134034
I just did it so that I wouldn't kill myself with a bar.
>>
>>39134102
It is

It's widely known that flat bench does shit all for aesthetics, or anything really besides being used in powerlifting and being famous with a long history.

Even Rippetoe says barbell bench is only done in his program primarily because it's history
>>
>>39134034
A few months ago, though I exclusively incline DB bench.
>>
>>39134073

He said the opposite of what you just said.

He said dumbbells was superior because he saw he could do less weight.
>>
>>39134126
I want to incline bench but it makes my shoulders feel weird.

Should I just do it at a VERY subtle incline?
>>
>>39134073
Were all doing this to look cool dipshit. More weight looks cool
>>
>>39134140
I put it on 3, if that helps. Doesn't need to be a huge incline, or you're just gonna end up working your shoulders, yeah.
>>
ITT: dyel faggots who can't even press 3pl8 lmao@ur lives

Then you should really switch to DB, BB is shit for chest development.

Yes, raise the flat bench just one level. That's how you're supposed to do it afaik.
>>
>>39134198
Then why do people do incline?

I don't get this shit man. There's so many heights and grips to do db bench...

Like what's with neutral grip and slightly diagonal grip?

Brotip: stop bb benching. There's no point of it except powerlifting. Do dumbbell bench instead

>>
>>39134218
The steeper the incline the more work your shoulders have to do. Grips are really preferential. For some reason, either my wrists are really weak or I have some fucked-up anatomy, but I have to do neutral or else my wrists will lock up and I can't hold the dumbell.
>>

what's difference between hands supine and slightly thumbs up? Any benefit for reducing chance of shoulder injury as I imagine?

A lot easier actually

In barbell you can bounce the bar or do all sorts of jewish techniques.

Also increments are easy. Buy platemates

Guy I need answers,

I have a home gym and the only dumbells I have are olympic handles that you load up with weight plates, i find it hard to do decent pressed because at the top of the rep they bang together, has anyone got any advice for this???

>>39134464

>>
They're honestly basically the same thing
>>
>>39134034

When I realized that after 3 weeks of switching to dumbell I made more chest gains than I ever did in 3 years doing barbell.

Been doing it for about 5 months now

>>39134226

Right now, I'm doing 3x8 with 100s in each hand and have been steadily improving every 3-4 weeks or so. Started with the 75s. Looking to move to the big boy rack soon where all the 105+ DBs are.

There are some impressive guys in my gym. There is this one dude who does incline with the 135 lb. DBs with perfect form, but instead of pressing both arms at once, he alternates, pressing one arm at a time, again with perfect form. About my height too, maybe a little shorter but definitely 6 ft. tall and not too much bigger either. Another is a supreme DYEL type I probably have about 60 pounds on. He will shred like 16 reps in a row with the 100s like he is pressing cans of soup. He's only about 5'5" though so that probably helps, but still.

>notyourblog.jpeg

>>39134508

In theory sure, just like how a Ford Focus and a Lamborghini Veneno are both cars. But, there are numerous benefits to dumbbell over barbell, including, but not limited to: depth and stretch potential (ie more chest development), activation of more stabilizers, each side of the body doing its own work essentially eliminating a dominate hand and asymmetrical development, shoulder health, etc.

iktf. see kids smaller than me all the time pushing 100s like its nothing. one dude even handed me the weights once thinking I'd use them because I looked a lot bigger and stronger than him (not fat). I then went to go wrack them and pick up the 80s instead ;-;

Tips for shoulder health on db bench press?
>>
>>39134226
60 x 8
>>
>>39134218

that's the beauty of db benching... you can all sorts of angles and grips.

for incline though you want the angle of the bench to be 30 degrees or lower. once you get to 40-45 degrees it starts to become more of a shoulder dominant press.
>>
>tfw i can only do 30 lbs per hand doing the DB press

is this bad? only been lifting for a month but it seems like a lot of people generally would have made a lot more progress
>>
>>39134122
Are people this stupid? Do u all just jump on the bangwagon and parrot what the most famous trend of the month is?
>2016
>Not doing flat BB bench

Do both
>>
>>39134835
Why?

Give me one reason to do barbell bench. There's NO reason for it
>>
>>39134161
This
>>
>>39134400

i feel like this is the only real downside to db benching. the larger increments (and the setup is harder esp with larger weights).

i found that to increase in DB benches, you'll have to rely on increases in reps and once u're able to do 3x10-12 (let's say you started at 5-6 and worked your way up), then you can probably make a go at the next weight increment and try for 6-8 reps.

it's a much slower / tedious progress than using barbells.
>>
>>39134823
How the fuck do I decide which will be most effective or prevent injuey?
>>
>>39134839
Honestly didn't mean to offend /fit/ just been in the sports industry for YEARS and it's just a fact to all athletes. BB bench is literally the granddaddy of upperbody exercises, helps athletes with explosion/strength and u can do a shitload of different variations (explosive sets/pause reps/1rep max safely).
U can stick to BB bench and constantly increase ur DB press weight but u can not do this the other way round as effective.

>Both are necessary tho, DB has benefits but that's anther story
>>
>>39134727

DB bench is pretty safe for your shoulders as it is, but just be sure to not over-extend, especially with the weights above your shoulders (as in cephalic, in medical term.), but unless you are hyper-flexible, your body will not allow for this to happen, which is what makes the movement safe.

>>39134834

You've only been lifting for a month. DO NOT get discouraged. But generally, yes, you should be seeing improvement. Form is the key to everything, and if your aren't lifting with the proper form (maybe your elbows are not flared enough or you are not getting the proper ROM, etc.) then progress becomes difficult. Have a gym staff member or trainer (most gyms have a free training session) look at your form.
>>
Broke my collarbone a few years back. Ever since then barbell BP just does not feel right anymore.
>>
>>39134897
Unless ur this guy or have to supplement the exercise with something else, u should really be doing a barbell and dumbbell bench 4 aesthetics lads
>>
>>39134895
thanks man, i should've added that i started at 25 but recently just starting doing 30's for reps. Generally my arms get tired as fuck from chest exercises so ive been incorporating some tricep/arm workouts, hopefully ill see more improvement in the future
>>
>>39134919

I don't trust people who use "u" or "u're" or any variation of such in a serious manner.
>>
>>39134919

I'm doing Dumbbell bench. This works just fine. Barbell however is not really working anymore, but I will give it another try next chest day
>>

>tfw no grip strength
>what a phaggot
>>
This thread is full of phaggots who can't even bench 3pl8s trying to convince people to give up the potential strength of progressive overload using a barbell to validate their own shitty decisions of using dumbbells over the fat superior (for size & strength) barbell bench.

This is worse than the guy who made the thread saying Squats caused him to get fat.

Just because you pussies can't lift a decent amount of weight, doesn't mean the exercise is shit.

Please remove yourself from the gene pool immediately.

true, but you're still getting stronger

someone who can do 12 reps with, say, 100lb, is stronger than someone who can do 5 reps with the same weight
>>
>>39134102
You have it the wrong way around matey.
BB is great for progressing with strenght, since you can "micro" load and go on to weights that are just not feasible with dumbbells.
Dumbbells on the other hand are far better for aesthetic gains since they isolate the muscle much more. They also do help quite a bit with bench preess progression, since I started doing low incline db press, my bench has been progressing quite nicely, even though it was my worst an slowest progressing lift
>>
>>39134400
Use reps to overload if you cant micro load

Just have the dumbbels on top of your knees, fall back and raise your knees with the dumbbells, then when you have the dumbbells up, you put your legs down.
Atleast thats how I do it.

50's (lbs) 3x14, all because our dumbbells only go up to 50.
Flat benched 250lbs 5x5 before our dumb gym dropped all plates and replaced them with more machines.
>tfw workout in office gym
They also just started some kind of "Company X's Biggest Loser", fatties now flocking in the gym. They hired some PTs from Gold's, I have no idea how those DYELs got their job.
>>

>>
>>39137230
No reason to lie on /fit/ familia. It's hard to find a new one because the gym is literally 3 flight of stairs away.
Been lifting for 6 months 5x5 barbells, then around that time they switched out barbells for machines so I switched to 3x10(now at 3x14) dumbbells, 8 months on this routine so far and also on a cut - after my cut I might go to a real gym so I can progress on strength.
>>
90lb dumbbells for 3x2 is my max atm, haven't hit DB bench for two weeks as I recently moved over to BB incline since my upper chest is lacking.

Secondary movement used to be incline DB but now its weighted dips. Still flat bench but only during my burnout sets. Pretty good change desu
>>
>>39134226
Not sure because I usually do BB for flat bench and DB for incline bench. I do 70x8-10 incline after doing BB bench and OHP.

I'd guess that I can press 100x8-10 on flat DB.
>>
>>39138038
>3x2 DB
Is this a joke?
>>
>>39134034
I only do dumbs incline because thats one of the very few remaining ways I can train my injured shoulders

bb I do because I enjoy powerlifting. I dont like the bench press but there isnt any good substitute for it. decline and incline are uncomfortable and when you arch enough its kinda like a semi decline anyway. with dumbs your weight is much lower and while good machines are great for hypertrophy you still need free weights to complement it and train stabilizers sufficiently
>>
Just alternate exercises to work all fibers.
>>
The last time I bothered to read up on the difference between the two barbell bench press gave greater strength gains over a set period, while dumbbell bench press gave greater muscle activation in stabilising muscles and biceps.
I personally love the convenience of having the weight above you with the BB which makes getting it into position much easier. Much smaller increments without the purchase of extra equipment.
If you're asked how much you bench press people almost always mean BB. Obviously these is a petty reason when in the context of impressing normies.
