My DL and Squat are both 245 pounds for 5 reps
And my Bench is only 155 for 5 reps btw, but I don't think your Squat and Bench should be the same weight.

>What do you guys train to get a big DL?
Uh... deadlifts.

If you're stuck, I suggest looking into your form, then your programming. Your form might be technically fine, however small adjustments can make a difference. One big thing I've noticed is that people tend to grip the bar poorly. If you find yourself tearing up your hands or having excessive callous formation, you probably have poor grip technique or poor grip strength, or both. Poor grip makes your body think it's weaker at a deadlift than it actually is. Another thing I've noticed is people having too wide a stance/grip.

What kind of rep scheme do you do? Lots of people wuss out and just do 1x5 for their working sets. Don't be afraid to go lower and do a bit of volume (but at the same time don't ego lift DL at volume; one way ticket to snap city).

I would also be equally concerned with improving squat, perhaps even moreso. Feelsbadman to have a squat equal to bench.

Bodyweight multipliers are a joke when you're that light though, they're not really useful for anything apart from impressing people that don't know much about lifting desu.

I was athletic before I did deadlifts, I could do like 40 chin ups and I had picked up enough stuff from the ground that my GPP for deadlifts was very high.

DL question.png
78KB, 1027x463px
Beginner here and I've got a question.
A friend of mine who is an experienced lifter recently corrected my DL form saying I should use my legs more and straighten my back further, because it puts less strain on the lower back and puts you in less danger of getting a ticket to slip city.
Because I wasn't sure I mastered that form I asked an employee at my uni gym who explained that there is no problem with engaging more lower back and using less legs if your form is correct.

Now the picture I made in paint is exagerated but should give an idea of what I'm rambling about (these represent the starting positions). Should I keep my back straighter and go lower (leading to the "iconic" barbell knee scrape) OR should I keep my legs at a large angle and engage my lower back more?
I understand that it depends on what you want to train more (back vs legs) but I really want to know what the more accepted/normal form is, even if it's just for peace of mind.
>>
>>39117715

>>
>>39123102
The left is a conventional deadlift with the hips too low.
The right is a stiff legged deadlift. It's an assistance exercise to target the hamstrings.

What you want is the back angle of the right one, and the knee flexion and bar placement of the left. But everyone's deadlift setup will look different depending on their limb length. What works for one guy won't necessarily work for you.

>A friend of mine who is an experienced lifter recently corrected my DL form saying I should use my legs more and straighten my back further, because it puts less strain on the lower back and puts you in less danger of getting a ticket to slip city.
I'm not sure what you mean by straighter in this example. If straighter means more horizontal like the right picture, then it is more dangerous for your lower back.
>>
I was doing 2 plate
Then I found our my form was gonna send me straight to snap city
Now I'm doing around 160 pounds
>>
>>39123180
Yeah the pictures aren't quite on point; the right one isn't meant to come off as a stiff legged DL.
The lifting friend recommended the left pose so with a more vertical back. Again these pictures are exaggerated, the right one looks more like a row here.

But anyway thanks for the insight senpai, I think I'm on the right track right now

Improve grip: chalk, wraps, hook grip

Train grip: heavy farmer walks, rack pull holds, pull up bar holds, transition if you can with weighted holds up to one arm holds
>>
>>39123081

Nothing wrong with 5x5 diddlies mate, don't believe the 'muh CNS' fearmongering, you just need to develop some work capacity and the extra volume can help a ton. It can take a while to develop high work capacity but I think anyone can do it.

Take a look at RTS generalised intermediate programming and how that leads into project momentum if you want to start looking at some higher volume stuff.

The other week I did 11 sets of 5 on one deadlift day and 4 sets of 4 on another.

My best deadlift is 672 but 4 people in my gym deadlift over 700 and my coach deadlifts 850. High volume is definitely a valid approach I'd say.
>>
>>39124027
i like doing volume deadlifts to train for deadlifts, but when people spout Muh CNS they usually mean 90% of their 1RM, which is what most beginner strength programmers use as their working weight.

I started with the 6 months ago. I went from being 6'2 135lbs to 6'3 145lbs since.

>tfw scared to deadlift because i'm relatively new to lifting and don't want to fuck up my back
The gym trainer demonstrated how you do it and then i tried but he just kept on correcting my form
unless someone's correcting my form I know I'll fuck up

SS has a really good step by step instruction for setting up the deadlift correctly every time. out of all the main exercises in the book I think the deadlift instructions are the easiest to understand.

Can my Squat be the limiting factor to my Deadlift?

Been having trouble progressing on the Squat due to mobility issues and circumstances (had the flu for a week, squatted lighter).
And I recently noticed my progress with the DL is slowing down, even though the weight is not high

>stayed two workouts on 120kg, first 1x4 then 1x5
>same for 122.5kg, barely did 5 the second time
>Squat is 92.5kg

I seem to encounter the most difficulty when first lifting the bar off the ground, hence me thinking it's the quads limiting it
I do conventional

If I can get my shit to at least 235 in squat & Bench I'll be happy.

I'm having Hip impingement issues, and I'm unsure how to fix it without spending money.

I'm hoping that a higher level of strength will help me start jogging without issue again.

'cause I can't swim for shit and I'm not sure if I could manage to learn enough to swim for cardio gains.

I have the feeling I curve my back too much when I try to deadlift more than 70 kg, and I'm afraid to go heavier, even though I feel I could. Are the muscles in my back too weak, and would staying on a lower weight for a while be enough to strengthen them?

if it's the initial pull from the ground you might actually find front squats can help, if it's your lockout try rack pulls
