Bright red usually means it's internal hemorroids or at least not as serious. Darker blood (sometimes brownish) means it's from further up your intestines, since it has had time to oxidize. If that's the case you should get to the hospital.

Lots of fiber and learning not to strain or force bowel emptying helps. Keeping clean as well. There are salves and suppositories for it too.
