I am able to work out all day, but because I don't have a good diet and won't be able to for a good while, I'm not sure exercise would benefit me if I just achieve a caloric deficit due to exercise and can't make gains.

You can Google have the shit here.
Strength programs:
Starting strength (SS), ice cream fitness (ICF), or Greyskull 5x5 are recommended here
They target developing strength and increasing numbers (how much you lift) quickly, with hypertrophy (making muscles larger) taking a back seat.

Splits, like chest/tricep, back/bicep, and legs/shoulders or PPL are considered the opposite, giving better results for hypertrophy than strength gains.

You'll get mixed results either way. Personally though, I'd recommend going strength then switch over, the routines are simple and structured as well as giving you a strength base to work with. Not only that, but it takes ages to gain strength without proper progressive overload (adding weight in a linear progression every week), and it feels shitty hardly benching more than 1pl8 (one 45lb plate on either side, 135lb total) after any more than a few months.
