Did he actually do this or was it just a self-created myth?

Just cardio would be enough?

I've heard that he wrote in his autobio that he was in a gay relationship during the period in which he claimed to be celibate/asexual. (It's sitting on my shelf but I'll never read it. Kind of a don't-meet-your-idols thing.)

Cardio and moderate calisthenics (nothing even very major, couple of pushups a day shit like that)

Wonder why. It wasn't exactly controversial to be in a same-sex relationship at that time in music, was it?
>>39085002
Probably not so controversial that he couldn't also be a successful musician. I think it was just a choice he made as part of his meticulous and self-conscious image control. Coming out can marginalize an artist. Whether it's rational or not, knowing that someone is singing a torch song for another dude just isn't the same as (mistakenly) believing he's hung up on a girl. It's less relatable for most listeners, and that ineffable relatability is a big part of why he's a living deity.
