Revival attempt #9001 edition

How was your training today? Are you looking to get stuck into the best and most interesting of the strength sports? This is the thread for you

I did front squats up to a 300lb single, 12x200lb axle push press and 3x10 pullovers with 110lb
>>
bump, you fucking cunts
>>
>>39041275
No one cares about smg. Hence why we are not replying.

Shoo shoo goblin
>>
>>39041291
fuck you too you prick
>>
>tfw you only got started really training strongman now at 23
>tfw hafthor was already competing at WSM at 22
I wish I had started earlier lads
>>
>>39041408
unfortunately elite strongman is basically the most genetically selective sport on earth. Either you have it and were hitting 6 plate deadlifts in your first few weeks of lifting, or you don't and will need boatloads of roids to be moderately competitive.

It's still fun, and I enjoy the more athletic events anyway. I'm pretty shit statically but I make up for it by being sanic in carrying events.
>>
>cutting and seeing my progress stall
>thinking of becoming permabulk

Is strong man for me?
>>
Running a basic 3x5 right now, and my goal is to get into strongman.
Is there a novice program I could run that would better suit my needs if I want to compete in local events in a year?
Should I switch to highbar squatting if I'm squatting low bar?
Not making too much upper body progress right now because of a problem shoulder that's rolled over and has a torn laburm, but it'll get sorted out. External rotations, rowing and rear delt rows haven't been a miracle cure so I'm seeing an ortho, shoulder specialist and hopefully a sports med.

Learning how to power clean right now but I'm mechanically retarded and don't put in enough effort.
>>
Been to three amatour strongman competition in my life. All of them were crazy fun, great sportsmanship and atmosphere!
It was nice to see how much i advanced in two years, even tho i rarely got the chance to train with proper equipment.
I just did deadlifts, squats and millitary presses like crazy in a regular gym, and it helped a lot.
The atlas stone is the most brutal and satisfying thing ever, the moment when you click and start to understand how it should be done is superb.
The competitions had some pretty nice events, like 240 kg yoke carry, 140+ stones and 110 kg coffer carry by hand.
>>
>>39043832
>Is there a novice program I could run that would better suit my needs
not really, you're better off just getting stronger. Reverse the priority to OHP if your programme has you benching more.
>high bar vs low bar
Doesn't really make a difference. Start front squatting though
>>39044315
nice
I've not had a chance to compete for a while, but my last events session I hit a 660lb yoke walk for 20 yards.
>>
>>39041408
Arild Haugen at 19. He gave up rather quickly though.

The lower the bar the better
Back squats or zercher only.

Around 5:25 in that video

>Either you have it and were hitting 6 plate deadlifts in your first few weeks of lifting, or you don't and will need boatloads of roids
First time deadlifting I pulled over 2pl8 (form wasn't that bad either. Spine was straight at least)
Do I count?
>>
>>39045031
>First time deadlifting I pulled over 2pl8 (form wasn't that bad either. Spine was straight at least)
no
>>39045011
An SSB squat is actually far closer to a front squat than a low bar squat. Front squats also have a lot of carryover to things like stone lifting because the portion after you've lapped it is basically a front squat.
>>
>>39045031
Absolutely not.

Maybe if you had started at 4-5 plates.
>>
>>39045085
Retarded
An ssb is a low bar squat with the weight even lower so it makes it more of a good morning.

Front squats are upright as fuark, with no good morning quality to them

You know nothing
>>
>>39045113
...START at 4?
My first time touching a barbell?

You're joking, right?
>>
Is it feasible to make your own log? I'm not really a woodworker, but my dad has decent excperience so I'm thinking it could be a fun thing to do together.

Or is it better to buy one (where ever the fuck you can do that) when I need to start practicing?
>>
>>39045207
>with the weight even lower
Have you ever done an SSB squat? The point where the weight sits on your back is really high. Look at Shaw here: >>39045011. The bar is sitting right on top of his back. If you're doing a squat with a yoke it's not a deadlift just because the weight is on the fucking ground
>Front squats are upright as fuark
An SSB squat should be as well, if you're doing a squat-morning with it you're doing it wrong
>>
>>39045215
Terry Hollands and Loz Shahlei both pulled over 200kg their first day in the gym. Eddie Hall benched 400lbs at 16.
>>
>>39045243
I have done ssb. I am positive you haven't.

Just listen to shaw explain how the squat feels to know how wrong you are.

And while you might stay more upright than a squatmorning, there is more resistance against staying upright, and that is the point
>>
>>39045215
Benni Magnusson deadlifted 4 plates his first week in the gym. After having broken his back skiing only months earlier.

These guys are genetic freaks. You have to be born huge and strong to have a chance.
>>
>>39045305
>Just listen to shaw explain how the squat feels to know how wrong you are.
Yeah, it pulls you forward. Like a front squat pulls you forward. The only difference is that if you lean forward too far with a front squat the bar will fall off. A low-bar squat doesn't pull you forward at all, it pushes you straight down. The back angle of a low-bar squat is the way it is for exactly the opposite reason that you lean forward in a safety bar squat
>>
>>39045308
>>39045249
Brb suicide
>>
>>39045333
>a front squat pulls you forward
You....you've never front squatted, have you?
>>
>>39045308
Well, I guess I was about 16 or 17 and had just wandered into Steve Gym. I had broken my back skiing some time ago and so I was eager to do something to make it get in better shape. Steve instructed me to do deadlifts, and so I did, three times a week. My first time around I only did 120kg, but a few days later I worked up to 180kg. I must have weighed about 140kg at the time though, having gained a lot of weight after getting injured.

"only" 2,5pl8 according to himself haha
>>
>>39045352
Only 30lb higher than my first time.
I feel hope.
Just need to surgerize this hernia and i am back in the game
>>
>>39045352
>My first time around I only did 120kg, but a few days later I worked up to 180kg.
Jesus

He probably had 300 in a year.
>>
>>39045350
front squatted 300 today
Look at when someone fails a front squat. The shoulders cave in because the back or core can't keep your torso upright
>>
>>39045385
He also weighed 140kg. You probably weighed 70-90kg I guess. Not that that number is reliable, but he probably did weight a whole lot more than normal people so he's gonna pull heavier.
>>
>>39045378
>but a few days later I worked up to 180 kg
If you can hit 4 plates within a week you might have a chance.

No but seriously the true test of genetics is rate of progression. I'd bet a thousand bucks that if we had an 18-year old Zydrunas Savickas (that had never lifted in his life) and put him on SS or 5x5 or whatever, he'd be the strongest guy on /fit/ within two years.
>>
>>39045431
>I'd bet a thousand bucks that if we had an 18-year old Zydrunas Savickas (that had never lifted in his life) and put him on SS or 5x5 or whatever, he'd be the strongest guy on /fit/ within two years.
easily. It's why I honestly believe that some of the more freakish people made their first WSM finals natty. Not nowadays, but before the late 2000s it was certainly possible for the more gifted lads
>>
>>39045405
Not him, but I've strongmen irl and it's not just a matter of being heavy. The guys have naturally huge frames. When Benni weighed 140 kg as a kid he probably wasn't as fat as most would think.

I doubt they ever looked average in their lives.
>>
>>39045431
I just wish there was more definite knowledge on how much roids affect it.

We should have 2 Savickases, one pinning and one not to see the difference on the top level genetics.
>>
>>39045011

Brians arms are the fucking size of a well built guys legs.
>>
>>39045471
Got any specific examples? I've heard this thought before, and I sort of agree. Earlier WSM contests were not as focused on max diddly and log. Might have given more room for natties I think.
>>
>>39045482
Roids add some, sure. But just looking at the guys in /plg/ it's pretty clear that genetics go a long way.

I'm pretty much 100% sure that Savickas could have beaten /plg/ champ Bodorio (290 kg squat, 190 kg bench and 315 kg deadlift) on linear progression within two years.
>>
>>39045482
>I just wish there was more definite knowledge on how much roids affect it.
I think you can tell who is really going for it with the celltech.
Eddie and Savickas are of a similar size and body comp, but Eddie got there far more quickly (and therefore with far more drugs). Savickas looks healthy, while Eddie looks like he's about to burst
>>
>>39041099
Love these threads for strongman webm's. I don't desire to be this large but I find it fun to watch. Post more webms please lads
>>
>>39045510
Phil Pfister comes to mind. Terry Hollands claims he made his first WSM (not final IIRC) naturally as well. Some of the lads in the 90s could well have done it, in those finals you had fairly light events (110kg/hand farmers etc) and pretty poor static displays (finalists no-repping 300kg deadlifts etc).
>>
>>39045526
Good point, Savickas does look healthier, but I also think he is more careful. He cuts down every off-season since he doesn't compete all too much any more. I haven't seen Eddie do a cut yet, but then again I haven't looked for it.
>>
>>39045571
That's seriously quite sweet, gonna watch the 90's contests then, I think I haven't watched most of them tb.h.
>>

>tfw 6'10", 315lbs, was able to put the 220lb atlas stone over the bar for reps my first time trying them at the gym, but my shoulder press sucks ass
Do I have a chance of making it big, bros?
>>
>>39045625
Hope your log press doesn't suck ass.
>>
>>39045625
how high was the bar?
if your moving events are good you could do well
for your ohp, how shit is shit? I'm pretty good at reps but terrible at max
>>
>>39045625

6'10 fuark

Pls get hueg
>>
>>39045688
I haven't actually tried maxing OHP that much, my shoulder mobility is just shit right now and I haven't worked on shoulder movements with the barbell before the last couple of months. I've gotten 155lbs for 3, but I wasn't too strict.

I don't remember exactly how tall the bar was, but it was near chest height. I also had to load the stone back up on the 6 foot platform at the gym when I was finished.
>>
>>39045721
>I've gotten 155lbs for 3, but I wasn't too strict.
eh, not great but if you get a lot out of leg drive you could just about manage a novice comp, especially since you're pretty good at stones.
>>
>>39045766
I don't really give a shit about novice competitions right now, I'm looking to enter one in December, but I'd rather focus on getting to an elite level in a few years and going to top level competitions.
>>
>>39045807
>I'd rather focus on getting to an elite level in a few years and going to top level competitions
Get lean now, and then do a Hafthor and go full dreamer bulk+massive celltech use for a few years. Don't even think about cutting til you're nearly 200kg and deadlifting 400kg.
>>
>>39045840
Guy I'm working with right now is putting me on about 6k cals per day, so hopefully I should get there. I'll probably get fat as hell but at least I'll be strong.
