Shrugs are garbage and contribute tightness to your probably already tight levator scapulae. Do hanging scap depresses. Basically the opposite of a shrug but hanging. Kind of like the first phase of a pullup but all you do is depress your scapula, no motion at the gh joint or elbow

True, but the ROM is negligible either way. If you have internally rotated shoulders, and a tight chest definitely skip shrugs, but if your posture is good then keep up the shrugging. There isn't really a secret to hige traps, it's mostly genetics or steroids that get you monster traps.

The OP asked for exercises to improve his upper trap size.
You gave him something that develops the lower traps...

There are other ways to train the upper traps without contributing to some posture issues.
