When you get to two pints a day you should start to worry

You probably have had fatty liver for a 2-4 years already, and some damage, but not point-of-no-return damage yet. Your kidneys are probably also suffering, pancreas and gall bladder not working optimally.

You can't fix it 100% but you will prevent further damage by quitting now.

If he also eats high protein while straining his liver like that he's fucking himself over even more.

I don't know how long it takes to develop but my dad drank non-stop all day everyday and he didn't start having Cirhosis problems until his mid fifties.

I was drinking 8-10 beers most days before my liver started to hurt. Drank like that for years before one day I had around 25 alcoholic drinks in a 12 hour period, woke up in pain and was in pain for 3-4 days. Liver swole up badly too. Stopped drinking for 10 weeks after that through fear of dying. Relapsed now though.

I drink 2 40zs of steel reserve a night have been for 7 years now and I'm still ok
