I was a mediocre swimmer in high school and even 5 years later when I started lifting I could bench 70kgs for 5x5 tng and pull 100kg 1x5 on day 1 even though I had no physical activity for like 5 years. I wasted way too much time cutting for muh abs and had shitty progress at first. Since I started bulking though my progress has been pretty good. I think if I had stuck with swimming my starting point would have been much better.

The adductor magnus is a huge and very powerful muscle.
The glute medius is very small in comparison.
Luckily the upper fibers of the glute maximus aid in hip abduction too.
Besides band work, unilateral exercises work the hip abductors well too.
One exercise that also helps prevent shin splints is to step on a platform with one leg, and hold a heavy kettlebell or weight with ther free hanging foot, while making sure to keep the hips even.
Side lying hip abductions (only feet and arm touch ground) look easy, but are really hard on the hip abductors.

People wiser than myself seem to think so. The Chinese (and Russians?) prescribe different kinds of sports to kids/future lifters, IIRC. Holistic/general development before specific development.

hey plg when I'm benching and reach the bottom part of my ROM, pic related kinda hurts. Well maybe not hurts, but kinda feels stretched and uncomfortable? Only happens on my left side, any ideas?
ps. doesn't need to be loaded bench. literally me sitting in my chair and doing the movement gives the same feeling.

What is the best way to introduce someone who realistically has no athletic background to lifting?

I was thinking day one just go through general SBD lifts and then accessories, set them off on some linear program and correct their form as they go over time

Bench: 100kg flew through the roof today, at least 110

I just used cuckols calculators on his site and it's making some pretty wild assumptions.

As a 175cm manlel, I should be able to reach around 90kg BW ~12% BF. I'm currently 80 after several months of barely lifting and being injured and shit and I don't think his 9% prediction is very accurate (see pic).

His calculator also predicts that I should be benching upwards of 200kg (my current is probably 120 if that) if I was 'maximally efficient' at my current level of LBM. I call bullshit.

When your hamstrings are weak/stiff you have trouble pushing your hips back and have to hyper extend your spine to compensate. Try widenening your stance on squats and practice touching your toes with a flat back.

CLEARLY first and foremost the guy has to learn to brace and start bracing when squatting and THEN, if something is still off, he can focus on fixing the next problem. But what do you do? You guys mind if I ask a noob question? I've been lifting for a couple months and haven't squatted yet, but reading about it made me interested so I tried to do it at home with no weight other than my fat body. Here's how it went.

>try to squat, go in front of mirror, use broomstick as bar replacement

>read a bit more, says I should increase space between feet

Not being used to the movement is correct, I have to keep all the cues of good form vs bad form in mind when doing it, but I don't know about having a weak lower back, if that's the case is there a way to know and fix it?

the thing is you might feel as though your head is fine because it's comfortable there but you adjust to what you're used to, chances are really high your head is too far forward but you don't realise because 9/10 people you see will have the problem but since it's so common it seems normal when it isn't, the same rule sort of applies to everything, chances are you are going to have flexibility problems with most things because you won't have done any work on them and if you haven't done work on them you won't have the mobility; you might think you do because you're able to put other parts of your body into hyperflexion (which is what is happening with your lower back [you're inflexible in other areas so your lower back is making up for it]) but you aren't because you actually have to work for it, so when you say you've never done anything for them the unfortunate fact is you'll have to and it'll suck at first but stretching can be fun once you start to see results

Alright anon, tried it again in front of the mirror and it's looking better, didn't hurt as much as before. Though I can't yet say it was comfortable it felt a lot more natural today, even with the almost horse stance space between feet. I also understand what you're saying about head position, I notice 98% of people have terrible posture and think it's "normal", that wasn't what I meant. Well, an hour or two from now I'll film it and then we'll be able to tell more accurately if I'm fucking up because of head position, in the mirror it doesn't look like it.

I'm not worried about the time or work I'll put in, just if I'm using time and work the right way. I'll probably lift for the rest of my life, I only want to know I'm doing it right.
As for results, though they are a great part of my focus, as long as I'm progressing month to month they don't need to meet my expectations.

head position is more of a problem in front squats than back squats but it can still be a contributing factor, since a head too far forward can put your lower traps in a weak position making it harder for your back to get properly tight

wide stance is a bandaid fix for bad ankle flexibility but the problem is you probably don't have the hip flexibility either so as i said your body will now try to make up for the inflexibility in other areas as well as making it harder for you to stay upright which isn't as big of a problem if you're doing low bar but you should never only get the flexibility you need but always improving
