Hey. Just joined my highschool swim team after 13 years of only summer league. (Don't worry, I'm 18.) I'm not fat by any means, but I'm not super skinny, and I'm ready to start putting on muscle. Any tips you have to make this season not hell? (Diet, pre/post practice workout, chlorine, etc.)

feel like dying each time i finish swimming 100m in my course.
don't really feel like i'm making any physical progress yet.
Don't be a bitch. Finish your sets. Always stretch before you get into the pool. Don't be a bitch. Always do flip turns. Don't breathe within the flags. Breathe every three to five strokes, never on even stroke numbers. Don't be a bitch.
Have fun swimming. It's the best excercise ever and breeds absolute animals that can use the mental fortitude forged in the pool to absolutely excel in other areas.

Have sex with the coaches daughter who is also on the swim team. Worked for me as far as making it not hell. I'll never forget her looking right at me when we all yelled " Go in Hard and come out wet" before our first meet.

You're going to get out as much as you put in. You're not going to have your best workout every practice. Learn from it. Always warm up properly, always cool down properly. Stretch AFTER workout. Lift back, chest, shoulders and legs. Anything else is vanity muscle. Learn breathing control and heart rate control.
The most important thing is to eat properly, just because phelps ate 20k call, doesn't mean you can. Maybe top out at 5k or 6k if you're doing doubles. Don't eat junk. Eat quality foods.

get plenty of fucking sleep every night
eat a lot of (real) food
rinse your hair in the shower before practice, deters the chlorine from fucking your hair
if your team provides weightlifting, don't waste your time benching 3 times a week. lots of pullups/chinups/ohp/glutes/core
frequently watch form videos and focus hard during less intense sets, your coach can't micromanage you

I cant believe im saying this on /fit/ but we actually have someone who knows what theyre talking about here
I was competitive swimmer and the most buffed guys are usually the sprinters, but if you just swim for fun try open water swimming.
