It's a realistic form of self defense at extremely high levels, any other martial art shows you how to fight early while Tai Chi early on is basically just super dificult yoga. Not saying Tai Chi is better for fighting than other martial arts becaue you get what you put in to most of them, but it's definitely viable if you put in a serious ammount of time.

Not that useful vs other people unless you're super good with it tho so it depends on what you wanna do with it

Tai chi is rad, but if you actually want to fight the time you'd invest in tai chi to get good is mostly wasted, once you get into the upper echelon of tai chi you encounter skillful fighters, but mostly because they're very athletic. Time/effort being a thing, you're better off with some combo of wrestling/jiujitsu/kickboxing.

you do know that tai chi was initally a fighting martial art don't you? and it's said that it's the most difficult martial art style to learn when studied properly, it was later that it was introduced as a meditation style thus making it move slow, tai chi is the top of martial arts styles, it uses circle like movements to destroy the enemy linear force. In china the masters would send only their best stundents to study tai chi because it is complex and has a lot of requierments to be done right, like never stoping while practicing and to stay at the same height with you knees bent at the same angle when you start and when you finish practicing it and being very fluid with your movements and always anticipate the next movement with your feet.
