It's a carb source. If you're diabetic, steer away from otherwise it's fair game.

Now onto why whole wheat bread is better: More fiber, more micronutrients, more protein

This goes for every option where it's "white versus whole wheat". I for one eat a lot of while bread or other baked goods with white flour but I also eat a pretty big amount of wheat bran along with my breakfast cereal. One of the best fiber sources per $ I've been able to find up until now.

Not surprising actually, most cheap 'whole wheat' breads are usually just white bread and then they add molasses or sugar and coloring. So you get the additional sugar which means its GI will be higher. You have to bake it yourself or go to a good bakery to get true whole wheat bread.
