I think the biggest issue for you guys is not being able to talk to people in general. I used to have that problem as well.

1. Start saying hi to random men (stay with me homophobes) not only is it no pressure and nothing lost it will teach you not to be afraid of starting conversations.

2. If you have an outgoing friend watch how he operates and take some of his technique, no shame in that.

3. Apply the same principles you would in the iron church. Expect to fail sometimes, you'll only be better for it.
