Depends on what you want to make. Your best bet is to find what you want to build, research the best language to use for it, and then just buy a book and use online documentation and tutorials and dig in.

Over all I'd suggest starting with a scripting language like python/javascript and then going onto something like c#/java/C++/C

I'm a security engineer and do scripting/light programming but I wish I could do more with programming. Me being in this field though, I know people in the NSA, and they actually know Edward Snowden, from the rumors about the guy he is actually a dick.
