I had no previous fire experience. I have three years college going towards an accounting degree. Cities every few years give Civil Service exams in which they require two years military or about 60 credit hours of college. The exam is mostly critical thinking and understanding with no knowledge needed beforehand. Mine was 150 questions in two hours. I took the exam years and years ago and placed in the top five. They select only around 40-60 every time they are hiring with thousands of people applying. I know the city of Austin has it every few years and has 500-1000 applicants with only 8-10 people getting the job. After passing the exam you have to do a PT test, background check, drug test, physical, and then a lie detector test. DESU lie detector test was bullshit and I passed with lying. The BEST route to take to get into fire service is to take it in college, but it's not the only way. Be prepared to be a volunteer for a while. I'd never volunteer though, it's shit money. DESU being a firefighter is shit money, i only make 50k a year for doing it but obviously with promotions you can get 70-80k. I sit on my ass all day and only work two days every eight days. Meaning I only actually work a quarter of the year. And at my 'work' i play video games and watch TV. I get five days off in a row too for plenty of rest for my gains, or I can work on those five days off and make even more money. I had a second job on the between days last year but only made around 80-90k.

its a very open career path and can go many different ways.

there is also a ranger academy, but i dont know anything about it. my career counts as two years of work experience so i may do that after i work for a little bit. get my degree (2 years of experience) and then get a job tagging wildlife or something, and a volunteer firefighter maybe (military service/law enforcement is a bonus) and then do the ranger academy.
between the relevant degree, firefighting (maybe) and the ranger academy, that gives me preferential hiring (from the academy) and from my degree 2 years relevant work experience (its a 4 year degree btw) which will give me an edge over other academy grads.
